TONIGHT is last #Oakland City Council mtg til Sept, discussing Army Base, budget, libraries and parking. Please use #oakmtg to comment!
With return of algebra to San Francisco schools, Oakland Unified is now the only Bay Area school district to systematically deny all 8th grade students algebra instruction. Students have to take it externally if they want to take Geometry in 9th grade.

Hamas's latest revision of the fatalities list not only debunks the 'genocide' accusation but suggests the West was subject to another Big Lie about the Jews that made the implausible seem plausible commentary.org/seth-mandel/h…

One reason the Palestine activists yell "genocide, genocide" all day long is that *they want to commit genocide* against the Israelis. It's the old "accusation as admission of guilt" thing, like when Trump calls his opponents "crooked".
You know, whether Israelis are Jewish or Buddhist or Zoroastrian or whatever doesn't really matter -- wanting to annihilate them is definitely genocidal.

The ferries on the SF bay generate $12M in passenger fares and have $145M in expenses. Ride them while you can, they are amazingly fast, clean, and almost always empty.

Oakland (presumably the East Bay) is just behind the second* tier of US cities for public transit use. *NYC is in a league of its own.
New 2023 Census data lets us rank transit use by city, a solid proxy for urbanism. NYC is the undisputed champ. Tier 2: SF, Boston, DC. Tier 3: Philly, Chicago, Seattle. After that there's a huge fall.

the fact that Kansas City’s publicly owned grocery store is struggling in part because it closed its jail so criminals immediately get released and then come right back using its free bus is so on the nose lmao

This is such an obvious and banal point, but no one claiming Israel is committing genocide is behaving as if that's really true, or else they'd be demanding Egypt accept refugees, they'd be furious at Hamas threats against the GHF and its weaponization of aid, they'd be in favor of Hamas's surrender etc. Instead it seems like the genocide people just really hate Israel

To be abundantly clear: we did not change the rigorous standard for becoming a certified air traffic controller. Those claiming otherwise are mistaken or lying. We did increase funding & training, and grew the ATC workforce after years of declining numbers, including under Trump.

In @TheAtlantic today, I argue the safe streets movement has taken an odd turn. Under the banner Vision Zero, not only is there just 1 acceptable solution—costly road redesign—but reformers now dismiss the importance of enforcement. Expedient, but deadly. theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv…
Road-safety activists claim that fewer police and better-designed streets will make driving less deadly, writes @greg_shill. But they should redirect some energy away from the design-industrial complex and “toward targeting the deadliest behaviors”: theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv…

Oakland's public safety staff declined by 206 employees (-12%), and other departments grew by 336 (+13%) over 5 years. Police will bear the majority of forthcoming cuts. oaklandreport.org/p/oaklands…
