The Madras Government, in April 1959, banned popular actor M.R. Radha’s Tamil play 'Thooku Medai'. He submitted the script of another drama Kathal Bali to the Madras Commissioner of Police and obtained a licence to perform it. On noticing that the play was similar to the banned 'Thooku Medai', the police registered a case. How Tamil actor M.R. Radha got away with staging a ‘banned’ play in 1959?

Tamil Nadu’s first Assembly by-elections since the 2026 elections are a key test for Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay and the ruling TVK. With former AIADMK MLAs contesting as TVK candidates in Madurantakam and Dharapuram, the bypolls will test voter sentiment on political defections, the strength of the AIADMK and the stability of Tamil Nadu’s new coalition government.

Historical records of debates on the Justice Ismail Commission Report that took place in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly as well as Legislative Council (since abolished) in 1978 reinforce that former Chief Minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin was indeed a political detenu under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during the Emergency.
