New research in Biological Psychiatry adds to concerns about the relationship between cannabis use and psychosis.
A large meta-analysis covering 149 studies and more than 71,000 people found that cannabis users experienced the onset of psychosis an average of 2.5 years earlier than nonusers.
The association became more pronounced in groups with a later average age of psychosis onset:
• Ages 20–<25: 1.6 years earlier
• Ages 25–<30: 4.43 years earlier
• Ages 30+: 6.3 years earlier
The authors describe the relationship as robust and suggest the findings should inform public health messaging about the potential psychiatric risks of cannabis use across the lifespan.
