it has long been understood that, qualitatively, a “netflix movie” exists in the liminal space between theatrical release and Lifetime production with some notable exceptions, even the biggest budget productions feel cheap, strange and worst of all, unmemorable
Dan Lin is out as film boss at Netflix. Lin’s firing comes in the wake of Netflix making 1,000 pink-slips given their recent slow growth, and minimal overall viewership spike. More details here: deadline.com/2026/10/netflix…

Christiane Amanpour is exiting CNN in June. “After many months of thought and a few sleepless nights, I have decided to separate from CNN, my partner of 43 fantastic years! I look forward to interesting new projects down the line, and will always be rooting for CNN and maintaining its history of independent journalism. Remember: always be truthful, not neutral,” Amanpour wrote in a statement. “Christiane has thought carefully about this decision, and she and I have been discussing it for some months,” added Mark Thompson, CEO of CNN, in a statement. “Like so many CNNers who will hear the news today, I’m very sorry to see her go, but I’ve come to accept that this is the right time for her, both personally and professionally.” variety.com/2026/tv/news/chr…

I don't know what happened this weekend in LA but was almost impossible to get good seats for You Can See Everything. Are movies back?

The Spanish singer Rosalía continued to defy convention with her fourth album, "Lux," recorded with the @londonsymphony, which contains lyrics in 14 languages, telling the stories of female saints and mystics through history. The self-described perfectionist who spent two years on "Lux" talks with @sethdoane about her mix of classical, opera and pop, and her almost spiritual commitment to her craft, defined by what she calls "a search for communion."

Two things can be true. She might've been scapegoated but also her tenure was defined by barely watchable slop. This super-serving worked till it didn't. Still think she had to go and maybe they can reverse course now. If Sarandos agrees, because he is just as responsible.

Corporate culture is brutal. Sarandos was at an inflection point earlier, he ditched Cindy Holland and went with Bajaria who doubled down on their vision of basic slop, international and live tv. Now Bajaria gets similar treatment in favor of Rice whose profile hints quality.

Hopefully will see everything this weekend.

Bestselling author Sally Rooney’s books will no longer be sold in the U.K. due to her support for Palestine Action, a protest organization labeled as a “terrorist group” under the U.K.’s Terrorism Act 2000: Rooney said in a statement: “In July 2025, the direct-action protest group Palestine Action was proscribed as a terrorist organization in the U.K. The following month, I wrote an opinion piece expressing my intention to go on supporting Palestine Action, which is not a proscribed or otherwise prohibited group here in the Republic of Ireland." “As a result, the fulfilment of contracts to publish my work in the U.K. could now constitute a serious criminal offence. After a process of consultation and deliberation, and with my full agreement, my publisher Faber has therefore determined that it can no longer supply my work within the U.K. I have made every effort to be honest with the public about my beliefs and intentions, and I am wholly prepared to accept the consequences.” variety.com/2026/biz/news/sa…
