You’d be forgiven for thinking this was the Alps. It’s actually northern Greece in full autumn. 🍂
Deep in the Rhodope Mountains, the Virgin Forest of Frakto reveals a completely different side of Greece, steep ravines, waterfalls, dense forest and slopes painted in red, orange and gold. This is one of the country’s most remarkable protected forest landscapes, home to beech, spruce, birch and black pine, with brown bears, wolves and roe deer roaming the wider area.
And in autumn? The whole landscape changes character. Wild, mountainous Greece in autumn at its most dramatic.
📍 Virgin Forest of Frakto, Drama, Northern Greece.
Would this be the side of Greece you’d travel for in autumn?
**** Access to the protected forest is controlled and generally requires permission, so always check the latest visitor information before planning your trip.

Hazel nuts were an important part of the diet of the ancient Irish and were quite possibly amongst the first things eaten by our ancestors when they arrived on these shores. And like other Autumn foods, such as the apple, they became a special part of Autumn and Samhain celebrations 🌰🎃
Gathered around a fire unmarried folk would give each of the nuts that they had collected the name of a potential lover and cast them into the flames.
The first nut to crack, or that which cracked the loudest, would reveal the name of their future love 🔥🍂

Good morning!
I imagine that contemporary painters and critics don't like my work very much, but they can't call me a lack of professionalism.

A legendary landscape: the view from the palace of Pylos. The magnificent beach of Voidokilia in the distance, overlooked by the Thrasymedes Tholos. The bay likely served as a harbour (where Telemachos landed), though an artifical harbour was built just to the north.
