This is exactly what happened today at Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute. A hall was booked by nationalist organisations for a programme. A group of Urban and Dimagi Naxals then stormed the venue, raised “Go back RSS” slogans, tore down posters and, as the video shows, tore apart and kicked posters bearing images of Bharat Mata and Swami Vivekananda. And yet, these naxals are now trying to play the victim. This has become a familiar pattern: create disruption, insult symbols revered by Bharatiyas, and then portray oneself as the victim when questioned about it. What is equally disturbing is the attempt by sections of the so-called liberal and intellectual establishment to indirectly justify or overlook such behaviour. The people of Bengal and India deserve to see this for what it is: an insult to symbols that represent India’s civilisational and national consciousness. How much longer will such open disrespect for Bharat Mata and Swami Vivekananda be tolerated?

🌆KOLKATA’S LOST WATERWAYS COULD BE MAKING A COMEBACK🚤 Back in May, I wrote “THE 300-KILOMETRE SECRET - KOLKATA’S LOST CANAL NETWORK AND THE CITY IT COULD BECOME”, imagining how Bengal’s forgotten waterways could one day become part of Kolkata’s modern transport network. Now there is a proposal to explore water-taxi corridors through the Adi Ganga and Bagjola Canal. A detailed survey is reportedly planned after Durga Puja to assess navigable stretches, water depth, dredging requirements and obstructions—including bridges and other structures that could restrict boat movement. The idea is not to launch water taxis immediately. The priority would first be restoring the waterways and making them genuinely navigable. And there is already some groundwork: KMC says significant desilting of the Adi Ganga has been completed, while its wider rejuvenation programme includes sewage-treatment infrastructure. If this moves from feasibility study to execution, Kolkata could finally begin rediscovering the waterways that once helped define the city. Just a thought ! On 22 March 2024, #SupremeCourt refused to stay the Election Commission Appointment Law. Justice Dipankar Datta was part of that bench too, along with Justice Sanjiv Khanna. The question no one is asking is this: If Justice Datta had a prima facie opinion on the neutrality issue, why he did not express that view in that order? Was that not argued by the petitioners then? Had he done that, the Act could have been stayed on that very ground. What do you think 😇

Apropos observations by Justice Dutta in EC appointments If you look at the trajectory of SC judgements in matters of appointments: 1. CVC cannot be appointed by government 2. CBI Chief cannot be appointed by government 3. Director ED cannot be appointed by government 4. DGP cannot be appointed by (state) government 5. Tribunal members cannot be appointed by government 6. Election Commissioners cannot be appointed by government Of course HC and SC judges are appointed exclusively by the judiciary itself. In which other democracy is the appointing powers of a democratically elected government forced to be shared with unelected bodies like the judiciary or with people who lost the election (LOP). What is the purpose of the elaborate election if the judiciary is then to say that the elected government cannot be trusted with appointments in high places hence others must also have a say. Does it remain a democracy where the will of the people, periodically expressed, is permanently circumscribed by an unelected body? If a major law and order issue crops up, who is held responsible or accountable? The elected government or the CJI or the LOP? Yet, they both have role in the appointing process but no role in the accountability matrix! An absurd result of these SC verdicts - the SC sits in judgement over the functions performed by the very people it chose to appoint ( CBI chief; CECs and ECs till new law came into effect). On the converse, if one were to take the view the high office appointments must be made with greater consultation, then what about HC and SC judges? If a SC judge can sit in appointment of CEC (as SC ruled) then why can't PM or LOP (for that matter) sit in appointment of a Judge? However, when such logical questions are put to the SC where a reasoned response may not be plausible, the hammer of Article 142 or the conveniently flexible concept of 'Basic Structure' comes down!
