Kirby Smart is trying to get one of his receivers off the field. He cannot do it. "I keep trying to take him off to save money and it's not working." The player is London Humphreys, and this is the strangest NIL story of the year. Humphreys grew up in Nashville and went to Christ Presbyterian Academy. He was a three star. His offers were Vanderbilt, Memphis, Middle Tennessee State and Minnesota. He picked Vanderbilt, and as a true freshman in 2023 he scored in his college debut. Against Wake Forest he went for 109 yards and a touchdown and was named SEC Freshman of the Week. He finished that season with 439 yards and four touchdowns. He made the SEC All Freshman team. He was one of three freshmen in the entire conference with four or more receiving touchdowns. Then he transferred to Georgia. And he basically stopped catching the ball. In three seasons in Athens he has 35 catches. Total. 531 yards, six touchdowns. This year, through three games, he has 2 catches for 11 yards. Here is the part that makes it interesting. Almost every NIL incentive in college football is tied to production. Catches. Yards. Touchdowns. Playing time on offense. Humphreys has a clause in his deal that pays him more for special teams snaps. Not returns. Coverage. The part of the game nobody wants. So he fights to be out there on every one of them, and every one of them costs Georgia money, and his head coach cannot talk him out of it. Against Arkansas he came free off the edge and blocked a punt in the third quarter. The ball traveled 14 yards. Smart on him this week. "He cares so much. He's the highest-character kid on the team. He's one of the best blockers." And then the punchline. "He's worth it." Now the honest part. He is getting paid for this. It is an incentive, and it is working exactly the way an incentive is supposed to work. But somebody had to agree to build the deal that way. A kid who was All Freshman in the SEC at 18 looked at a roster full of five star receivers, understood he was not going to be the guy, and tied his money to the ugliest job on the field instead of transferring again. He is a senior now. He says his job is teaching the young receivers how to do it. Most guys chase the ball. This one chased the coverage unit.
