“The greatest concerns are breach of privacy, misuse of drones for criminal activity, or threat to national safety.”
Magdalena Szymańska, PhD, Deputy Manager of the Active Mobility Unit at the Municipal Transport Authority in Gdańsk, Poland, emphasised how public perception and trust are becoming decisive factors in the deployment of drone technologies across cities.
This Aerial Cities panel from the 2025 edition brought together a cross-section of Europe’s drone ecosystem to explore the realities of urban air mobility and #BVLOS #drone operations. Moderated by Lorenzo Murzilli, Co-founder and CEO of Murzilli Consulting, the discussion featured key perspectives from regulators and city authorities actively driving #implementation on the ground.
Natale Di Rubbo, Drone Project Manager at the EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency, Enda Walsh, UAS Manager at the Irish Aviation Authority, Thomas Curran, Head of the Survey & Mapping Division at Dublin City Council, gathered to explore the key challenges and enablers of the future of drone #integration in European airspace and cities.
Across the discussion, a clear consensus emerged: while regulatory and technical progress is essential, the true enabler of drone integration in Europe will be collaboration between regulators, cities, and industry, anchored in public trust and incremental, real-world deployment.

“The main gap is the uncertainty, the lack of collaboration, and the lack of harmonization. I could better say it's like we are starting from zero which is each one of the entities.” - said Marta García Gutiérrez, UAS Programme Manager at Telespazio Ibérica, while highlighting a key challenge: #HAPS operations still lack a common baseline, with stakeholders effectively starting from zero, making harmonisation and adoption difficult.
HAPS are already operational, but integration remains constrained by fragmentation and uncertainty.
This insight comes from a DroneTalks and CANSO webinar on Higher-Altitude Platform Systems and Airspace Integration, exploring their integration into existing #airspace and its implications for regulation, operations and coordination.
The session was moderated by Lorenzo Murzilli, Co-founder and CEO of Murzilli Consulting, and brought together Nicki Harricharan, Operations Programme Manager at CANSO, Léonard Bouygues, Director of Aviation Strategy at Sceye, Marta García Gutiérrez, UAS Programme Manager at Telespazio Ibérica and Jesús Antonio García Muñoz, Head of ATFCM/ASM Division and Air Traffic Controller at ENAIRE.
The discussion also addressed key integration challenges, including:
Airspace integration between stratospheric and conventional operations
Traffic management and cross-layer coordination
Regulatory frameworks and certification pathways
The evolving role of #ANSPs in managing higher-altitude operations
Implications for #drone operations and future advanced air mobility ecosystems

“This is how we enable the industry to grow faster: through understanding, collaboration, and strong public-private partnerships.” – Glen Lynch, CEO of Volatus Aerospace.
At Aerial Cities 2025 in Dublin, our Junior Business Development Manager, Marta Shavgulidze interviewed Glen Lynch about what it will take for the #drone and #AAM industry to truly scale beyond pilots and isolated use cases.
His perspective was clear: scaling comes from aligning operational need, regulatory enablement, and what is deployable in the real world.
He highlighted how #BVLOS drone operations at Volatus Aerospace are already enabling multi-drone, single-operator models, improving efficiency and reducing operational complexity. He also pointed to growing opportunities driven by defence investment in Canada and expansion across Africa and Southeast Asia.
His conclusion brought it back to collaboration, explaining that real progress depends on open engagement between industry and regulators to build trust and enable safe scalability.
That’s exactly where Aerial Cities comes in. It creates the environment for these conversations to happen, connecting decision-makers from industry, regulators, and public authorities to address real deployment challenges and move from discussion to implementation.

In our interview ahead of Airspace World 2026 in Lisbon, Eszter Kovács, Co-founder and CEO of DroneTalks, asked Nicki Harricharan, Operations Programme Manager at CANSO, about the hot topics and key themes that will define this year’s discussions on stage.
From her perspective, the most important areas are emerging as interconnected shifts across the #ATM ecosystem, rather than standalone trends. At the centre of this is the integration of new entrants, #drones, #AAM, and #space operations, which is fast becoming an operational reality rather than a future concept.
Enabling this integration requires continued digital transformation, with #SWIM, FF-ICE, and Trajectory-Based Operations (TBO) driving more coordinated and data-driven airspace management. Yet technology alone is not enough; resilience around CNS systems and data integrity across the operational network are becoming increasingly critical foundations.
Underpinning all of this is the need for cross-border collaboration and global interoperability, as #airspace grows more shared and more complex.
What ties all of these themes together is a clear shift in mindset: moving from reactive operations to more predictive, data-driven decision-making.

"Large-scale BVLOS drone operations give us the ability to scale both topline revenues and gross margins. It dramatically reduces the mobilisation and demobilisation costs." — Glen Lynch, CEO of Volatus Aerospace.
At Aerial Cities 2025, our Junior Business Development Manager, Marta Shavgulidze, spoke with Glen about Volatus Aerospace’s operational evolution over the previous year and what it signals for the wider industry.
Their recently scaled up #BVLOS drone operations approvals have become a real driver of #profitability. Volatus has fundamentally redefined unit #economics by moving away from the traditional model of five trucks, ten personnel, and five drones. Its 2026 operating #vision replaces this with a dramatically leaner structure: one truck, one operator, and five drones, delivering an estimated 70% reduction in field personnel costs.

"The sector is no longer just about building better drones, but about establishing the aviation-grade #infrastructure for #airspace digitalisation that allows uncrewed systems to fly safely alongside crewed aircraft," said Thomas Jimenez, VP of Uncrewed Aerial Systems at uAvionix.
The transition from experimental drone projects to reliable, scaled operations depends on one critical factor: Certainty. We sat down with uAvionix to discuss FlightLine™, the high-availability backbone bringing "Surveillance as a Service" to the drone industry. By bridging the latency and redundancy gaps that free tracking apps simply cannot reach, uAvionix is setting the standard for BVLOS #drone operations.
In this exclusive feature, we dive into:
- How Part 146 services and FAA Part 108 BVLOS standards are creating the legal path for long-range flight.
- Why buying a "slice of data" in a Netflix-style model beats buying expensive hardware.
- Achieving sub-300 ms latency and dual-frequency monitoring for true tactical deconfliction.
- Simplifying scaling of operations through proven FAA-standard infrastructure.
The future of Advanced Air Mobility (#AAM) isn’t just about the hardware; it’s about the connected aircraft technology that ensures every flight is a safe one.

In our latest DroneTalks feature, AVSS takes us inside the shift from regulatory intent to operational proof, where parachute recovery systems are becoming a core part of how BVLOS #drone operations are approved and deployed.
As regulators move toward measurable ground-risk mitigation, technologies like AVSS’s ASTM F3322-24a compliant systems are helping close the gap between policy and practice, supporting operations over people, in urban airspace, and within critical public safety missions.
Whether it’s FAA Category 2 approvals or daily DFR operations, the expectation is consistent: #safety needs to be demonstrated in real conditions.
This article explores:
- Why BVLOS drone operations now depend on verifiable ground-risk mitigation
- How parachute systems are influencing regulatory acceptance across multiple markets
- What real-world DFR operations reveal about trust, safety, and performance
- How safety hardware is becoming a foundation for long-term operational scale

As CANSO Airspace World 2026 is approaching in Lisbon on 26-28 May 2026, Eszter Kovács, CEO of DroneTalks, interviewed Nicki Harricharan, Operations Programme Manager at @CANSONews .
One key takeaway stands out ahead of the event as highlighted by Nicki:
“The future of air traffic management really depends on true integration across systems, stakeholders and regions. It’s about shifting from local optimisation to a more holistic approach where we optimise the performance of the entire network as a single interconnected system.”
We interviewed Nicki before the event to explore how air traffic management is evolving as airspace becomes increasingly complex and interconnected, and what true system-level integration means in practice for regulators, ANSPs, and industry stakeholders.
The discussion touches on:
• The integration of new entrants into shared airspace
• Moving from siloed operations to ecosystem-wide coordination
• Digitalisation enablers such as SWIM, FF-ICE, and Trajectory-Based Operations (TBO)
• Cross-border collaboration and global interoperability
• Trust and information sharing as operational foundations
• The shift from reactive to predictive, data-driven decision-making
What becomes clear is that airspace transformation is no longer about isolated optimisation, but about building a connected system where performance is managed at network level, not individual operational level.

“The main reason why a #satellite gets used is when there is no cellular, or when cellular can’t be relied upon, or when there’s an imperative to have a second form of communication to back up”, says Alastair MacLeod, CEO of Ground Control.
When we are talking about safety, especially in #BVLOS #drone operations, #communication systems are capital to comply with regulatory requirements and scaling drone activities.
At Aerial Cities 2025, Thilo Uebbert, @murzilliconsult’s Manager of Project and Programme Management, interviewed Alastair to explore why satellite communication systems have become essential in the drone industry.
While most drones rely upon cellular #connectivity, further distances and longer flights are creating new needs. Ground Control offers a dedicated satellite link to trigger immediate "Return-to-Home" protocols or deliver key messages about conditions and unpredicted events. Whether satellite acts as the primary link or the ultimate fail-safe, the goal is clear: no circumstances should exist where you cannot communicate.
Ground Control’s early contact with manufacturers and the ability to produce customised solutions, tailored to each #aircraft, allows operators to work with a safe and efficient integration of satellite communication.
