Digital staining is advancing quickly in computational pathology — but how robust are AI algorithms when the stain domain changes?
The amazing team at The @OhioStateMed, together with collaborators at @StanfordMed, @VirasoftCorp Corporation, and PathScience, evaluated an AI tumor-detection algorithm on 168 paired prostate whole-slide images (chemically stained H&E vs. digitally stained H&E). Slide-level performance was strong overall, with high specificity across both domains:
Chemically stained: 80.4% sensitivity | 92.9% specificity | 84.5% accuracy
Digitally stained: 42.9% sensitivity | 100% specificity | 61.9% accuracy
Paired accuracy was significantly higher on the chemical stains (P = 1.1 × 10⁻⁵). Importantly, the sensitivity drop on digitally stained slides appears driven by stain-domain calibration differences rather than loss of tumor-recognition signal. Positive calls on the digital stains also skewed toward high confidence.

After this week, the House and Senate won’t be in session at the same time again until SEPTEMBER 14 if we keep the current schedule.
That’s insane. We STILL need to pass the SAVE America act and prevent Democrats from shutting down the government in October.
This would NOT fly in the business world. We need to stay here until we get ALL our work done. That’s what the American people expect of us.
