At the hotel resort club lounge and, without fail, every 2 minutes a different child approaches the candy buffet and you hear a parent yelling "NO NO NO NO NOOO MOREEEEE" as they run to stop their child.

I've stayed in hundreds of hotels across America and Europe. 5 star, $2000 a night establishments. Marble bathrooms, branded items. Eloborate welcome amenities. And then you get to the bed and find... this... A pillow with the structural integrity of a wet paper towel. Fold it in half, it stays folded. Meanwhile a $80 business hotel in Tokyo or Bangkok hands you a pillow that could survive a war. How do entire continents sleep like this? Genuinely asking.

Influencers going nuts over the JAL Marriott status swap. Here's the brutal reality: As a JAL top tier elite the best you can get is Marriott Gold status, which anyone can buy for $200/yr. As a top tier Marriott elite the best you can get is oneworld ruby, which doesn't get you much. It's basically a database tapping program designed to drive revenue on each side and it will work. If we dig deeper on long term viability: Top tier JL elites most likely already have top tier (bonvoy gold is below mid tier) at their fav hotel chain. Giving these folks gold won't make them switch from their higher tier at another brand. Top tier (Titanium/AMB) bonvoy members also highly likely to hold top tier airline status elsewhere and oneworld ruby isn't going to sway their flight spend. Having seen data from over 1million status matches I can tell this is fantastic marketing but that's about all. Nobody drops their higher tier status for a lower one elsewhere unless they're about to lose status. There's other ways they could have done this without giving out higher status which would drive real ecoonomial outcomes for both parties. But at the end of the day this will probably deliver some activity to both parties, and that's what it's all about, right?

Can't wait for my motorcade to turn up. @emirates steps it up a notch. Hidden Platinum benefit?

One of the seldom-discussed truths about airline elite status: the best benefits are hidden in plain sight. - You always get your choice of meal; never realising others missed out - You're never bumped from an oversold flight. Someone else is - Overhead bin space is basically guaranteed as you board before it runs out - When your flight cancels, you're rebooked on the next one before other passengers reach the front of the queue - Your call gets answered in seconds, not hours - Your bag is "accidentally" 3kg overweight? Waved through with a smile. On a recently flight I had 4 carry ons with a combined weight of 25kg. No issues. Another airline I have top-tier status with has Whatsapp customer support. Things that take non-status holders hours to accomplish I have sorted in 60 seconds with a real person. None of this appears on the benefits page. The airline never tells you it happened. And that's the point. Status isn't only about lounges and upgrades it's about the invisible removal of every pain point in air travel. Deliberate, positive discrimination for the best customers.

HSBC owned brand space on every aerobridge in Singapore, London and Hong Kong any other cities I frequently fly to for what feels about 20 years. I've probably walked through 1,000 HSBC-branded jetbridges. Tried to open a business account with them. Then a wealth account. Ghosted both times. Two decades of marketing and god knows how much they've spent to win me over and zero minutes spent replying to me. If the rest of the bank had the same go-getting attitude as their marketing team... they'd be unstoppable. Instead... they've probably facilitated the massive rise of neo banks.

People with money chase status in all forms of life, and airline status is one of those. Long-term frequent flyers care less about miles. I burned 900,000 Emirates miles this month using the cash+miles slider. Great redemption value.
