Are steroid shots bad for your knees? 🦵
The study most often used to warn patients away from knee steroid injections did find more cartilage loss — but how much?
→ About 7 shots over 2 years
→ 0.11 mm more cartilage loss than saltwater
→ About the thickness of one sheet of paper — roughly a third of one arthritis grade
What the study can't tell us: what one shot for a flare-up does. That's the question most of my patients are really asking.
Know your dose — for steroids, too. Talk with your doctor about how often, not just whether.

184 clinics in 2024. 102 today.
One of regenerative medicine's biggest chains is shrinking. I went through the sales data, the franchise math and the federal court filings.
One brand's problem, or an industry problem? 🧵
What it means for our field:
• Compliant ≠ approved. Disclose it.
• Marketing isn't medicine.
• Financing raises the stakes.
• Know thy dose.

His 3rd rotator cuff surgery. The first with a PRP injection.
At 4 months he says there's a big difference: pain gone within days, no pain through PT, and his therapist was amazed at his rotation 6 weeks after surgery.
One patient's story. Results vary.
Questions about rotator cuff repair or PRP?

Don Buford, MD, Orthopedic Surgeon, Dallas
We also covered PRP vs A2M for in-season athletes, laser, SAM, shockwave, and the complicated question of insurance coverage for PRP.
Thank you to UCLA Orthopaedic Surgery and the Luskin Orthopaedic Institute for Children.
What PRP topic should I cover next? #PRP 3/3
As a UCLA Medical School graduate, this was a full-circle moment. UCLA gave me the opportunity to attend medical school during the off-season while I was still chasing a professional baseball dream with the Baltimore Orioles. 2/3
Not all PRP is the same.
The #1 PRP metric tied to human clinical outcomes right now? Platelet dose.
Honored to return to UCLA as Visiting Professor for Orthopaedic Surgery Grand Rounds to discuss how we can maximize outcomes for patients. 1/3

Replying to @AANAORG
@AANAORG and @BiologicAssoci1 are hosting a hands-on course to allow you to work through real clinical scenarios, weigh the evidence, hear faculty debate the options, and then put what you learn into practice in the lab.
Register: mailchi.mp/aana/train-with-e…
This co sponsored @AANAORG and @BiologicAssoci1 course will be a unique course focused on medical decision-making with orthobiologics.....the fastest growing section of orthopedics right now. Come for the open discussion with practicing orthopedic surgeons and other orthopedic experts, stay for the hands on expert ultrasound training including the augmented reality injection trainers used in association with @iofoundation This course is designed for anyone who treats orthopedic patients....MD/DO/PA-C/DPT/NP/ATC/ DPM etc.
Knowing options is one thing. Knowing WHEN, WHY and for WHOM to use them for is another. Work through cases, weigh evidence, hear faculty debate different approaches - then take those scenarios into the ultrasound lab. Put your decision-making to the test. aana.org/biologics

Most "failed" PRP studies never tested PRP. They tested an under-dose.
Worked: ~5.5B platelets per injection, ~10+B cumulative OR 10+ Billion in a single dose.
What Didn't Work: ~2.3B as a single OR multiple dose.
Patients are almost never told their dose. Neither are readers of the paper.
Quantify every dose.

The deadline to submit an abstract for IOF MAX with TOBI is August 31.
The IOF Education Committee reviews every submission for placement on the program. We're looking for original research with clear methods and real data.

Low back pain kept him off the golf course and away from running.
3 months after non-surgical PRP, he's back to both — and says he's ~85–90% of normal.
Your own platelets, helping your body heal. No surgery.
Could it help your back? 👇
Individual results vary. #PRP
