We’ve had baseball hockey college football NFL football Tour de France, baseball. Basketball. All in the midst of a pandemic. Has anybody stopped to consider how this was all accomplished? The answer is simple - follow the science.

1) SARS-CoV-2 Vaccines - I promised a Tweetorial and here we go. This is going to be long and nerdy. But I'll make sure it is easy to understand. If you want more details, please just read this: nature.com/articles/s41586-0…

New study finds Covid19 patients are no longer infectious after 11 days of getting sick even though some may still test positive. The data from Singapore adds to a growing body of evidence showing people don’t transmit the infection once they’re recovered. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

The bottom line analysis from the Korean CDC demonstrating that those testing positive for SARSCoV2 after recovering from covid WERE NOT infected or contagious. The positive hit on the subsequent PCR test was dead virus and could not replicate in viral cell culture.
Korean CDC analysis of 285/447 (64%) who retested #SARSCoV2 positive post #COVID19 👉Viral cell culture (n=108): 0% pos 👉Contacts traced (n=790): only 3 ill, all w/ other exposures 👉These ppl are not re-infected or still contagious. It's old, dead virus. bit.ly/3e9DPlv

A number of seroprevalence studies (that look for antibodies to covid and assess the overall level of population exposure) have now been completed in both U.S. and abroad, and they suggest that outside of epidemic cities; overal infection rates and exposure remain relatively low.

My Op Ed in today's @WSJ on how we can effectively use antibody (serology) tests for covid19 to inform our health and assess our risk as we start to reopen the economy and re-engage in work and the leisure activities we enjoy. wsj.com/articles/antibody-kn…

As we re-open business and leisure activity we need to watch data closely, define a new normal where we do things we need and enjoy but more safely; with added vigilance. There are ways to reduce risk and restart economy. Thoughtful op ed from @MartyMakary nytimes.com/2020/05/14/opini…

Important finding. It suggests that herd immunity could be achieved at a lower threshold than what's typically assumed, because the most susceptible people are the ones who get infected first. Some of those who remain uninfected do so because they may be less susceptible. 1/2
Individual variation in susceptibility or exposure to SARS-CoV-2 lowers the herd immunity threshold medrxiv.org/cgi/content/shor… #medRxiv

Studies suggests activities held outdoors as temperatures warm pose lower covid risk than those done in confined indoor spaces. As we re-open, states should look to ease rules to allow more recreational, religious, and business activities to occur outside. medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

Daily positive cases of covid19 as a percent of total daily tests continues to fall nationally, a very good sign as covid testing expands. Declining positivity could be a leading indicator of an epidemic starting to decline. 10% is still high but it's coming down at a steady pace

Evidence of immunity in those who recovered from covid19.
Assessment of #SARSCoV2 antibody response AND cellular immunity in patients recovered from #COVID19: assays, in N=14, indicate most developed neutralizing Abs and their titers correlate w/ numbers of virus-specific T cells cell.com/action/showPdf?pii=… @ImmunityCP

A big win for patients and the first building block in what will be an improving toolbox for reducing death and disease from covid19. FDA's authorization allows for 5 day use in patients who aren't intubated, which will extend Gilead's supply of the drug. nbcnews.com/health/health-ne…

1/2 This is something we've been discussing for some time: Evidence from China shows while manufacturing has restarted, consumer activity hasn't rebounded. Partly it's reduced consumer confidence, but people are also afraid of viral spread and staying home nytimes.com/2020/04/28/busin…

2/2 This is the outcome we must avoid in the U.S. If we restart economic activity, but we don't substantially reduce viral spread, businesses may reopen, but consumers may be nervous about venturing out and engaging in activities. And our economy is one thats led by the consumer

New: Study of 318 outbreaks in China found transmission occurred out-of-doors in only one, involving just 2 cases. Most occurred in home or public transport. Raises key chance for states to move services outdoors (religious, gym classes, restaurants, etc). medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/…
