There surely must be a special place in hell for those who place their suitcase on its “back” in a luggage rack! 🧳🤯

Amazing approach on AA78 to #LHR 27R - amazingly bad that is. As we descend over London, some bloke got up and went to the bathroom, emerging with <2000 feet of altitude left. Cabin crew just ignore it. No wonder I generally give @AmericanAir a swerve! 🛬

But these scenarios rely on a human using AI for nefarious purposes, which is entirely possible. But I think people conflate it with AI going rogue.
General Sir Richard Barrons says it is impossible to understate the peril of unchecked AI. "That takes you to terrible places, like drone swarms against populated places like sports stadiums and above all, the manipulation of bioscience to produce pathogens designed to kill."

🤨 When I joined the Navy, the ‘welcome pack’ was an instruction to arrive wearing a jacket and tie, to bring my own iron and that I must be “clean shaven or wearing a full beard. Moustaches are illegal in the Royal Navy”.
Excl. The British Army has begun sending 'welcome packs' to new recruits ahead of starting Phase One training. The pack includes a welcome letter from the Head of Recruiting, a notebook and pen, and a Casio watch - worth £20. So far, 2,900 packs have been sent.

Stuck on a plane at Heathrow. Don’t know when we’ll get to take off but I can assure you that it’s absolute hell, they keep brining me this Louis Roederer stuff 🤷‍♂️. Safeguard, as we used to say in the Navy. God’s honest 🧐

A colleague of mine died this week, a couple of months short of his retirement. This holidays ad I’ve just seen on the Liz Line is so very true. Live life while you can…

I wrote about a key AI threshold being crossed. Namely, that the doomers don't sound so mad any more - because the madness of the world has caught up with them.

Researchers have found novel viruses that kill bacteria, not by looking for them in the usual places, such as oceans or sewers, but by using artificial intelligence. This is exciting but raises important ethical and safety concerns, says Simon Clarke bmj.com/content/394/bmj-2026…

Donald Trump is not a scientist. RFK Jr. is not a scientist. They do not know more than the scientists and researchers who study this stuff. Parents should listen to their children’s doctors.

Military time. There is an airport where the military and civilians share a runway called RAF Northolt in west London. A plane was taxiing, and the pilot called the tower to ask for the current time of day. The tower responded with a question: "Are you civilian or military, and if military, what branch?" The pilot asked why they needed that information. The tower responded: “If you are civilian, it's 3 PM. If you are Air Force, it is 1500 hours. If you are Navy, it is 6 bells of the afternoon watch. If you are Army, the little hand is on the 3, and the big hand is on the 12. If you are a Marine, it's Thursday afternoon.” 🤣🤣🤣

Perhaps we should sell off our pile of US debt (second in size only to Japan’s) 🤔
NEW | Trump called the UK “a bankrupt country” and said it could become wealthy by opening up North Sea oil. The comment adds pressure on Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who says Britain will take a “pragmatic” approach to North Sea resources.

But Borthwick almost managed to bin it in the second half, predictably 🏉🤯🇦🇷🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🚮 #ArgvEng #NationsChampionship
That’s as complete and convincing a half as England have had under Steve Borthwick. Only concerns would be that they could be even further ahead and that Argentina dragged their way back from a similar position in November. Lots of very good individual performances.

I remember listening to the news come in on the lab radio when I worked in Sheffield. It was many years later that, on 7/7 a Consultant lent on the side my hospital trolley and told me “It’s cancer, no question”. I’m still here and now cancer free, but I find this date difficult.
21 years ago this morning, Islamists murdered 52 people and injured 784 in London. There have been many attacks since and countless others have been thwarted thanks to a combination of luck and vigilance. Never forgive. Never forget.

I *almost* hope @EnglandRugby lose (which they will anyway). It’ll be the first stage in the necessary catharsis to rid the team of awful coaching. #RSAvENG #NationsChampionship
