It was an honour, a privilege and a sad duty...

An urgent call to action, delivered at the European Emergency Medicine Congress, @EuropSocEM 2024 - drawing upon my years of experience in the field, and my time as Regional Director of @WHO_Europe.
If there's one thing that can keep Ministers of Health awake at night, it’s the functioning of their country’s emergency departments.
It’s highly visible, life-saving work where – unfortunately - any problems can quickly become fodder for media scrutiny and public criticism.
The ER is also – essentially – a window into society’s deepest, darkest problems.
Alcohol and substance abuse. Road safety neglect. Mental health neglect. Climate action neglect.
The scale of pressure on ER staff and resources is extraordinary. And it is only getting higher.
Every year in Europe, one in four people visit an emergency department.
And emergency department admissions account for 70-80% of all hospital admissions across the region.
We are seeing trends in the wrong direction, such as waiting times getting longer and longer.
And many emergency departments – particularly in rural or remote areas – are simply not meeting optimal standards to deliver quality patient care.
