I understand there are levels of corruption in Washington. There always have been, but this is ridiculous. Anyone apologizing for Trump on the corruption or giving him an alibi, you’re part of a cult. Try to get yourself deprogrammed. @philrosenn

Within one 24 hour period, Trump: - got out of a $100 million IRS fine - secured "immunity" from all future tax investigations for his family and friends - created a $1.8 billion slush fund for lawbreaking supporters - was reported for likely insider trading worth nearly $1 billion All of the obvious things to say about this are true. It's bad. Nobody even tries to defend it. The closest thing to a defense you get is something about how "but Democrats suck" and "woke was also bad," which is not a defense, but rather a kind of moral blank check made out to the administration to give them the right to do anything. But what I'm most curious about is whether this sort of lurid corruption creates a countermovement that successfully returns government to rule of law or whether it's establishing a norm of executive imperialism that every future administration will use to achieve its ends, which can always be justified by the moral blank check of "the other side is worse, so let us do whatever we want."

Deficit spending is an unfunded tax liability. When politicians don't have the courage to actually tax people, they find the most pernicious and regressive way to collect anyway. Inflation. They weaken the purchasing power of the dollar and monetize the debt. The people who get hurt are the ones without assets. If you own assets, the nominal price goes up and you feel fine. But if you're a worker just trying to get by, you're losing purchasing power every single day. Someone is taking your time and your energy away from you. And it's exactly why people are so angry.

We are ALL FAILING this country. Donald Trump needs to be removed from office. He should have been removed before the war started. He is mentally unwell. Forget the Jesus pictures. Forget the Pope. We can go through hundreds of examples. The sane washing — pretending this is normal — that's just the surface problem. The real problem is that we have willing accomplices. What we have in America right now is a complete failure of political elites to execute on the constitutional system that was built specifically for this moment. We are all accomplices to this man's reckless behavior. -Every senator who stays quiet. -Every executive who writes the check. -Every commentator who normalizes it. He needs to be removed from office and he won't be.

He keeps digging himself deeper into a hole since his tweet yesterday. What a tissue of nonsense. He just can’t stomach that the French cut a deal for their ships to transit the Strait of Hormuz, weakening the U.S. and Israeli position. It will slowly dawn on them that no one is willing to pay a price for a war initiated under false premises, least of all through hypocritical appeals to Western solidarity. Trump may realize, too late, that U.S. power was largely anchored in its alliances, and that by trashing them he has made the U.S. considerably weaker.
I am and always have been a fan of France. I started studying French in 4th grade. I minored in French in college and love travelling there. But France today is a problem. France is guided by “France first.” Unlike “America First” which strengthens and benefits the world militarily, commercially and morally, France First sells out to the highest bidder. It’s the underbelly of French historical collaboration with Nazi Germany. It undermines the West, and Ukraine, as France cuts deals with Russian and is a top buyer of Russian natural gas. It’s why they work with the IRGC in Iran so French ships can transit the Straits of Hormuz. There’s no one they won’t cut a commercial deal with. Their immigration policies have turned their country substantially over to Muslims whose motives and influence are even more problematic. All that is bad enough. But now they won’t give the US overflight rights as we fight in Iran. We don’t want their troops or their ships. We want and should have overflight rights. France is a historical headache for the US and much of the west. French governments relish playing that role. France is only sometimes an ally. France is a real problem for the West.

Let me read you the MAGA checklist. 👇🏼 We were going to release the Epstein files. Until Trump showed up in the Epstein files. So we bombed people to distract from them. We bombed a school in Iran with young kids in it. We built Alligator Alcatraz — a sewage-backed penitentiary for immigrants in Florida — and laughed about it on camera. We kidnapped children and didn't know where we were sending them. We manipulated the markets. Repeatedly. We accepted a $400 million jet as a bribe and kept it after leaving office. We excoriated allies who stood with us for over a century. Threatened to attack a NATO country. Treated Canada like an enemy. We came after the First, Fourth, Fifth, and Fourteenth Amendment rights of American citizens. Every price in America went up because of the tariffs. Then came the tax bill - if you make a million dollars or more — $7,000 benefit. If you make $50,000 or less — we're taking $500 away from you. But here's what's finally moving the needle: Gas prices. It turns out the red line for MAGA is $8 a gallon going into the 250th birthday of America. Nobody wants to grill hot dogs and explain to their kids why it costs $120 to fill the tank. The approval ratings are going into the gutter. And he doesn't care. That's the part that should terrify everyone.

I gotta hand it to Trump. Destroying the stock market, obliterating his own political party and launching nuclear war is a bold alternative to just disclosing whatever in the fuck he did in those Epstein files.

Here's the hard truth nobody wants to say out loud. 👇🏼 A society works when the middle class and lower middle class have rising incomes and feel aspirational about their lives. Right now they feel economically desperate. And that desperation is real and it is valid. But Trump has provided zero policy solutions. None. He's an avatar for their anger. I understand that. I genuinely do. But what they want right now is to wreck the entire system. The system that produced the greatest economic miracle in the history of the world. Not tweak it. Not reset it. Wreck it. And you know who else wants that? Vladimir Putin. Our adversaries have one goal: make the British and American people believe their elections don't matter. That their institutions aren't legitimate. That the system is rigged against them and their vote is meaningless. Make them cynical. Make them feel left out. Make them burn it down. Trump feeds that narrative every single day. Not because he's a Russian asset. But because his entire political existence depends on people feeling like the system is broken beyond repair. And our adversaries are sitting back and watching it work.

.@JamesTalarico: The only minority destroying America is the billionaires. Trans people are 1% of the population. Muslims are 1% of the population. Undocumented people are 1% of the population. We are focused on the wrong 1%. Trans people aren't taking away our healthcare. Muslims aren't defunding our schools. Immigrants aren't cutting taxes for themselves and their rich friends. It’s the billionaires and their puppet politicians. The culture wars are a smokescreen. They want us looking left and right at our neighbors instead of looking up at them. The biggest divide in our politics is not left versus right, it’s top versus bottom.

Children die in school shootings and it’s “not the guns”. Mass shootings claim lives multiple times a year and it’s “not the guns”. Kyle Rittenhouse shot 3 people during a protest and it’s “not the guns” ICE kills Alex Pretti, and suddenly it’s his fault because he “had a gun”
