The problem for the Republican Party in Alaska wasn’t ranked-choice voting; it was their candidates. Requiring a candidate to get more than 50% to be elected isn’t a scam; it’s sensible. Let’s get ranked-choice voting everywhere.

I’ve spent ten years warning about the erosion of representative democracy resulting from increasingly centralized power, but even I didn’t imagine a Congress that would be handed a 5,593-page bill at 1:46 p.m., vote on it at 7:35 p.m., and then brag about the good job they did.

The United States doesn’t have a functioning legislative body. A few congressional leaders decide almost everything substantive. The rest is mostly a show for the public.

End qualified immunity. End civil asset forfeiture. End the drug war. End overcriminalization. End no-knock warrants. End militarization of police. End mandatory minimums.

A big reason good legislators give up on Congress is that we don’t legislate. Leaders hand us a huge bill, give us little time to review it, don’t let us amend it, and barely let us debate it. Then, the left and right media lazily or dishonestly frame support or opposition to it.

We should vote on each proposal separately. Massive bills with dozens of topics aren’t serious efforts to change law. They’re messaging bills with no expectation of getting signed. They cram in so much that they’re never written well or reviewed carefully. nytimes.com/2020/06/06/us/po…
