Here is a list of countries that the Israeli national team has played in football since October 7th, 2023: Albania Andorra Belarus Belgium France Georgia Hungary Iceland Italy Kosovo Moldova Norway Romania Switzerland The only other country that had to relocate the match because they couldn’t assure the safety of the Israeli team was Belgium, and this is because security anxieties in Brussels were already exceptionally high due to the fact that only one year prior an Islamist terrorist murdered two Swedish football fans right outside the very same King Baudouin Stadium during a Belgium vs. Sweden match. Ireland really needs to look at itself in the mirror and accept the fact that, in Europe, we are very much an outlier in this respect. This is not a policy matter, such as sanctions on Israeli settlements, for which one can make legitimate arguments in favour of. This is a matter of a visceral hatred against Israel and Israelis, one perpetrated from the top-down in Irish society, that has become so serious that the safety of Israeli players cannot be assured here (and not due to a threat of Islamist terror). I care little whether people regard it as specifically antisemitic or not, this is unacceptable regardless and it should never have been normalised. The fact that, even with the change of venue, this extremism only continues to grow with our *own national team* now being targeted is an utter shame and disgrace.
