Thoughts on the diplomatic catastrophe. (1) Trump's behaviour stems from his narcissistic needs. But he just doesn’t see Zelensky as a good source of narcissistic supply. He is spectacularly dismissive of Zelensky. (2) Vance escalated the situation in a pre-meditated way -for a MAGA audience, and to impress Trump. He was completely in control when he did it. An act of accomplished bullying. Zelensky was ambushed. (3) Zelensky arrived and looked flat. He wasn't ready to do what Macron and Starmer did. When he got ambushed, he was petulant, combative and unprepared. Bill Clinton used to say that high level politics is smiling and eating shit at the same time. Zelensky couldn't do it. Most people in the pro-Ukraine bubble will reject point 3 but in doing so, they will be delusional. In 2025 it's time to get real. (4) What we witnessed is what it looks like for democracies to melt down, and for their foreign policy to melt down as a result. Democratic decline causing geopolitical decline. (5) Article 5's credibility is irrecoverably depleted. We can slow further depletion, and we can create new security infrastructure in the future, but we can't bring article 5 back to health. (6) Authoritarian populisms, circulating around the world, share the ideological feature of hyper-liberalism. When a magical primacy given to market morphs into a primacy given to war of all against all in which the mighty win. You get what you want by buying it, and if you can't buy it, you threaten, extort or use force. While they are different in several respects, as far as this feature goes, Putinism and Trumpism are the same phenomenon. (7) Next comes a test of European resolve, initiative and democratic capacity. It would be excellent, but surprising, if Europe met this test well.

Maybe we should take some of that trillion that’s going into GPUs to train LLMs and put a little slice of it into a fund to save western democracy.

US is the same as UK! This is mostly reversion to mean after a big spike in 2022.
Some try to look at this as the cannibalization of human jobs by AI but the reality is more pedestrian. These jobs started disappearing after 2022 when the UK regulators became unpredictable, making capital investment there by technology companies a bad idea.

European (including uk) taxpayers have given more aid to Ukraine than the US. Do we get some mineral rights too?

The reason job applications make you copy all the info off your CV into dozens of individual boxes is to create a manual barrier stopping thousand of people speculatively applying for every job. It's actually a good thing.

The echoes of the 1930s right now are so strong. Feels like the 2020s will be a huge setback for what thought were shared western values. I just hope this rise of selfish autocratic strongman tribalism is temporary. Prayers for our kids.

Now is the time for a bold and audacious UK! The UK invents the future. It's time for scientists to lead and build it here too. 100x more UK scientists are capable of starting civilisation-defining companies. 5050 UK helps them start. Applications are open! The path from scientist to founder is hard and murky. Where do you start? How do you know if entrepreneurship is for you? 5050 is a free programme to help great scientists and engineers become great founders and start deep tech startups. Whether you’re curious about entrepreneurship, validating an idea, or ready to build — 5050 is for you. 5050 has helped launch 55 companies, many of which wouldn’t exist otherwise. • @markwbudde joined as a postdoc at Caltech. 5050 helped him decide he didn't want to start a therapeutics company but instead instead offer to others the workflows he built to speed up his own research. Three years later @plasmidsaurus is profitable and growing fast, delivering overnight plasmid sequencing across all 50 states and most European countries. • Niccolo joined as a Tesla engineer. Three months later, he co-founded @SailClippership and is building autonomous sailboats to decarbonize maritime shipping. “Without 5050, the chances of starting the company were maybe 10%.” • Chi and @tayshin0827 joined as postdocs at MIT, unsure if they were ready to start. Within weeks, they spun out and are now working to enable in vivo cell reprogramming. At @fiftyyears, we’ve backed 100+ deep tech startups and helped them raise over $4.6B. We’ve built deep tech companies ourselves and published the Spinout Playbook. We've distilled everything we know about deep tech entrepreneurship into 5050. In partnership with @ARIA_research, we’re excited to bring 5050 to the UK. 5050 helps you answer: How do I turn my breakthrough science into a business? What do I need to make a startup idea work? Is entrepreneurship for me? Am I ready to be a founder? We’ll coach you through the early days of building in deep tech. Through the programme, you’ll: • Zero in on civilisation-scale problems to tackle. • Learn what it takes to grow into a great founder. • Learn the critical components of building a deep tech startup, from recruiting to fundraising to negotiating IP rights. You’ll also join a community of entrepreneurial scientists and deep tech founders eager to share their experiences and support your journey. Helping great scientists and engineers become great entrepreneurs is our jam. Link to apply / recommend is below!
