Reasons to love the Cincinnati Reds.
#1: The true Big Red Machine
Baseball is better with starting pitchers like Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander going deep into games. This is just a fact.
Analytics has made teams more efficient, while simultaneously making the game much less fun to watch.
Old friend alert
The Seattle Mariners make it official: manager Dan Wilson is out.
‘Collectively we failed to meet our own expectations this season,” Jerry Dipoto said. “Dan and I both care deeply about this organization, these players, and the future of the Mariners. After much discussion it was concluded that a new direction is best for 2027 and beyond.’
I was at this game. It was fun.
Remember: when no one gets fired for this debacle, it means one thing:
The Reds think all of this is acceptable.
Reds need to go back to the 1969 home unis. Best they’ve ever looked. chaddotson.substack.com/p/th…

This is the correct take.

MAD MEN is the #1 show of the century, probably all-time. Unparalleled depth, performances, themes, emotions; the best drama that is also somehow the best comedy. I know this; you know this; your mom knows this. We don't have to be babies who pretend otherwise.
When I was a kid, the World’s Fair came to Knoxville and everyone I knew thought it was the greatest thing ever.

Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer, the old grandmasters, care deeply about the future of pitching. They have plenty of thoughts -- and a set of five rules -- to bring back the starter as we once knew him.

True story: In 1987, Willie Mays said he was honored to be compared with Eric Davis.
My grandfather used to say some players make the game look easy and a few make it look unfair.
Eric Davis in 1987 was the second kind.
He hit three grand slams in May alone, which tied the major league record for one month that Rudy York set back in 1938, and he was doing it in a Reds outfield where he also happened to be one of the best defenders alive.
The number that stops me is 129.
He gave back 33 games to hamstrings and shoulders and still finished at .293 with 100 RBI to go with the 37 and 50.
Nobody had ever paired 30 homers with 50 steals before him. Somebody out there watched a player like this and has been waiting years for an excuse to bring him up.
When @cgarber8 and I wrote the chapter on Eric Davis’s 1987 season, we kept finding quotes like this from everyone around baseball.
People don’t realize what a preternatural talent ED was.
