1995: Mudge published "How to Write Buffer Overflows", one of the first papers about buffer overflow exploitation. Then Mudge sent a copy to Aleph One, who wrote "Smashing the Stack For Fun and Profit" in 1996. Seminal paper to seminal paper.

I'm often critical of Effective Altruism (EA) and I'm sure I'll get more pushback for this, but I've been thinking a lot lately about the discourse on AI doomerism, extinction risk, etc., and here's my big take on what's going on and why. Buckle up, friends, it gets spicy.🧵

Today is the anniversary of the testimony I and other members of the l0pht gave to the US Senate in 1998. It was the first time the US Govt. publicly referenced “hackers” in a positive context. The coverage was national and even international. Come behind the scenes. /Thread

The Intel 8086 was released in 1978, starting the x86 line that still dominates computing. I'm reverse-engineering the chip by studying the silicon die, and I think I've spotted a bug fix in the silicon. They didn't have microcode updates then so they patched the silicon. 🧵

We've had an uptick in usage in Eastern Europe & rumors are circulating that Signal is hacked & compromised. This is false. Signal is not hacked. We believe these rumors are part of a coordinated misinformation campaign meant to encourage people to use less secure alternatives.

As an RF/ELINT nerd, this is very clever and cool.
The Radar Interference Tracker (RIT) is a new tool that allows anyone to search for active military radar systems It has already proven useful in spotting potential movement of military equipment near Russia’s border with Ukraine – as @oballinger explains bellingcat.com/resources/202…

We used to publicly break things for fun and shared benefit as a community; these days, attackers & security vendors may equally profit from defenders’ ignorance. Perverse incentives abound in security, per @dotMudge: youtu.be/Czf24RXIAAw&t=3012s #sadtrombone

Here's an extra bit of 🔥 lit under you in case you didn't realize you need to patch log4j. It's also very interesting to see the FTC put a clear stake in the ground, and to do it somewhere that no one can argue about it. At all.

Some missing color from @josephmenn’s history of DARPA’s Cyber Fast Track - at @dotMudge’s “dirty dozen” (7 samurai?) meeting, Hobbit arrives barefoot, @daveaitel in full black suit & tie, optyx with bright blue hair, etc. linkedin.com/pulse/when-hack…
And that's why I think Cyber Fast Track was one of the most beneficial security research grants in recent history. (cc: @dotMudge) <3

Normally I don't pay much attention to celebrity causes but this is one that has been often on my mind lately. Even small grants of a few thousand for basic research are absolutely mired in red tape and paperwork. We need to cut through that stranglehold.

I'm hiring on the Product Security and Architecture team within #infosec @Twitter. We are the ones that run ahead of trends to figure out how to secure the things. We are the ones who work with partner teams to build security into the things they do. 1/x
