She kept going back to him.
Not because he was good to her. Because every time he hurt her, he followed it with just enough kindness to make her stay. A little warmth after the storm. An apology that felt like love. She was not addicted to him. She was addicted to the relief that came after the pain he caused.
That is trauma bonding. The mind mistakes the end of suffering for the presence of love.
It rarely happens only in relationships.
It happens in businesses too.
An entrepreneur clings to a failing product because he remembers what it once was, not what it has become. A founder keeps funding a dying venture, mistaking sunk cost for loyalty. A team stays loyal to a strategy long after the market has moved on — because letting go feels like betrayal, not wisdom.
Nokia once commanded over forty percent of the global mobile phone market. When Android arrived, Nokia was offered a seat at the table early. They declined, certain their own platform was superior. By the time they accepted reality and partnered with Microsoft in 2011, the market had already moved on. Within two years, their market share had fallen to almost nothing.
BlackBerry made the same mistake. It trusted its keyboard and its security reputation long after the market had shifted toward touchscreens and open app ecosystems. By the time it responded, its relevance had already been decided by everyone else.
Both companies were not destroyed by weak products. They were destroyed by loyalty to a version of themselves that no longer existed.
That is the business equivalent of trauma bonding. Holding on to what something used to be, long after it has stopped being that thing.
The lesson for every entrepreneur is simple, though rarely easy. Know the difference between commitment and attachment. Commitment serves the future. Attachment protects the past.
If a decision is being defended more by memory than by evidence, it may already be time to let go.
