IAUE SIGNS MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING WITH AGRICULTURAL SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURIAL FOUNDATION Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria, on Thursday, September 8, 2026, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Agricultural Social Entrepreneurial Foundation (ASEF). The Chief Executive Officer of the Agricultural Social Entrepreneurial Foundation (ASEF), Mrs. Rosemary Adebayo, signed for her Foundation while the Vice-Chancellor of IAUE, Professor Okechuku Onuchuku, signed for the University. Speaking shortly after the signing, the Vice-Chancellor of IAUE, Professor Okechuku Onuchuku, emphasised the importance of agriculture not only for the sustenance and survival of the economy but also for the workforce, noting that if people are hungry, productivity will be low. He said that the Ndele Campus has vast hectares of land for cultivation and demonstration purposes for students of Agriculture and for transforming agricultural produce into valuable forms. He described the partnership as a welcome development that will drive and grow the economy, provide support for students in practicals, provide food for the University through productive commercial agriculture, in addition to making IAUE an agricultural hub, ensuring food sustainability, transforming the economy and generating revenue for the government and the economy. On her part, the CEO of the Agricultural Social Entrepreneurial Foundation (ASEF), Mrs. Rosemary Adebayo, expressed delight with the partnership and the opportunity to train students. She informed that they are glamorizing agriculture and making it attractive for people who are running away from it to embrace it without feeling ashamed. She hinted that part of their task is to re-orientate young agriculturists, livestock farmers and those intending to venture into it using organic fertilizer and larvae for them to have a sense of pride. Earlier, the Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Professor Godfrey Kalio, noted that the collaboration is for training and capacity building for the University and communities, adding that the University will benefit from the partnership in terms of internally generated revenue. The Memorandum of Understanding between the two parties, covering collaboration under Project Waste4Meal, will among other things ensure that research activities involving students and staff comply with IAUE's research ethics and academic integrity policies; provide access to relevant academic research and technical expertise, including staff and students participation, subject to institutional policies and availability of staff and students; facilitate access to appropriate University facilities, laboratories, land and equipment for research, training, demonstration and commercial activities, subject to applicable University policies; and integrate Project Waste4Meal activities into relevant academic research and community engagement programmes where appropriate and subject to internal academic approval processes. The purpose of the MoU is to establish a formal structural framework for institutional cooperation. The aligned Project Waste4Meal aligns with IAUE's strategic objectives in teaching, research, innovation and community engagement and supports the University's positioning as a leader in emerging agricultural innovation and circular economy sectors. It will also expand experiential learning, internships and enterprise development opportunities for students and graduates of IAUE, and build institutional and professional capacity through training, certification and continuing education programmes. DEPT. OF EARLY CHILDHOOD/PRIMARY EDUCATION HOLDS MAIDEN CONFERENCE, CALLS FOR LAW ON CHILDREN'S USE OF AI The Department of Early Childhood/Primary Education, Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, held its maiden conference on Monday, October 5th, 2026, at the Postgraduate Hall, with the theme "The Child in an Era of Artificial Intelligence". The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Okechuku Onuchuku, represented by Prof. Peter Eke, Dean of Natural and Applied Sciences, lauded the department and described the theme as apt, while the Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Prof. Nnamdi Anero, and HOD, Prof. Beatrice Onyebuchi Amadi-Ali, noted that the historic conference aims to integrate AI into child development to raise children who are digitally smart, culturally rooted, and emotionally healthy. Delivering the keynote, Prof. Anthonia Omehia observed that Nigeria is now an information-rich society where AI is widely adopted in schools and hospitals, but warned of serious drawbacks from over-dependence by children, including emotional, social, mental and physical problems. She expressed fears that AI could render schools useless, make teachers redundant, reduce school population, increase out-of-school children, and cause poor learning, less human interaction, poor creativity and poor mastery of subjects, noting that advanced countries are already taking steps to curb the menace. Prof. Omehia therefore called on government to legislate on child utilisation of AI, provide strong leadership for the future of learning, and build ICT infrastructure nationwide to close the digital divide. She urged schools to formulate fair-use AI policies, integrate AI literacy and fact-checking into the curriculum, and retrain teachers to become data creators, while libraries as resource centres must be AI-enabled for learning and innovation rather than shortcuts. She further stressed collaboration between parents, teachers and schools, noting children spend 133 hours weekly at home and only 35 hours in school, so parents must first foster morals and reinforce rules to help check anxiety, isolation and addiction. The event featured lead papers by Prof. Abidogun Babajide and Dr. Oluwatoyin Gladys Obikoya, award presentations, and cultural performance by children from Emma Domino International School.
