One of the cheapest cold-prevention interventions I’ve seen: Gargling with plain water 3x/day reduced upper respiratory infections by ~36% in a randomized trial.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The cited study found a 36% reduction in one 2005 RCT, but Cochrane 2023 pooling with Goodall 2014 showed little or no benefit from gargling (RR 0.91, 95% CI 0.63-1.31). cochranelibrary.com/cdsr/doi/10.10… pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16242593/ bmcinfectdis.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.11…

Today on TSEE, we're sharing a list of 10 cool things about mitochondria. Truly amazing organelles! From their many functions and behaviors to their potential as targets for enhancing health and treating diseases, we keep discovering new features of mitochondria that reveal how much more they are than powerhouses. What is this list missing? What are your favorite mitochondrial facts and features? tseenergy.substack.com/p/10-…

Given rising interest in the rapidly strengthening El Niño event in the tropical Pacific Ocean, I've created a one-page fact sheet succinctly describing what El Niño is, this year's (remarkable) forecast, and potential impacts from California to global scales. [Thread]

Congratulations @niroshajmurugan and everyone else whose work was covered - a really important field! It deserves much more focus.
You emit light. Expanding biology beyond molecules allows us to consider another layer of life: how energy, including light, may reflect and perhaps help coordinate biological activity. Thank you to @JoMarchant and @Nature for featuring our work alongside other leaders in the field, and for opening a broader conversation about what might be possible, the tools we must build, and the next generation of scientists we must train. Now, we have the opportunity to determine what the light of life is telling us.

3/ Most chronic tendon pain is not "tendinitis." True inflammation is actually rare in these cases. What we usually find is tendinopathy, a failed adaptation, disorganized collagen, and a tendon that has not kept up with what you are asking of it. The treatment for the two is different.

Discovery of a 14-protein biomarker that predicts lung cancer 5.6 years before it is diagnosed, even in non-smokers, and an anti-inflammatory medicine that prevents its progression. And, challenging dogma, the proteins are not coming from cancerous cells!

Today on The Science and Experience of Energy, @niroshajmurugan and I share how sunlight and other kinds of energy don't only have effects on the surface of our skin. Certain wavelengths of light can travel into our bodies and potentially have meaningful effects on our mitochondria, our cells, and ultimately our health. Light affects our biology, and the best hypothesis about what the "receptor" through which light energy is converted into useful biology, is that mitochondria are the receptors. These data further emphasize that mitochondria aren't just the cell's powerhouses. They are dynamic, energy-sensitive processors with wide-ranging effects on our biology. tseenergy.substack.com/p/sun…

Exercise does far more than build strength or endurance—it activates molecular pathways that help regenerate muscle, heart, and brain tissue. Understanding these signals could pave the way for “exercise mimetics” that bring regenerative benefits to those unable to exercise. 🧬🏃 #Exercise #RegenerativeMedicine #HealthyAging @WuTsaiAlliance nature.com/articles/s41392-0…

You are not insane. It's just the damn histamine. Histamine intolerance and/or MCAS are criminally underdiscussed when it comes to mental health. Yet your anxiety, racing thoughts, insomnia, irritability, impulsivity and so on, are often nothing more than a little extra histamine and we have proof for this. That's also the common link between allergies, certain types of hair loss, skin issues such as psoriasis, ADHD, insomnia and anxiety. Here's what you need to know. Thread 🧵

How the 2026 run rates of the top AI labs and pharmaceuticals compare 1. Tirzepatide (~$51 B) 2. Anthropic (~$45 B) 3. Semaglutide (~$33 B) 4. Pembrolizumab (~$32 B) 5. Apixaban (~$25 B) 6. OpenAI (~$25 B) 7. Dupilumab (~$20 B) 8. Risankizumab (~$18 B) 9. Daratumumab (~$16 B) 10. Biktarvy (~$14 B) Tech people, come to bio: there are lots of diseases left to solve
"I think what tech people misunderstand is just the size of the TAM in pharma." @zebulgar says capital will rotate into pharma after AGI: "Anthropic is at what, a $60B run rate? Keytruda, the drug that Merck did in 2019, that one drug's topline is $25B in revenue. Just that one drug." "By the way, once there's AGI, what do you think everybody's going to be focused on afterwards? Everybody's just going to want to live forever. Where do you think the capital is going to rotate into? It's going to rotate into longevity, therapeutics, and manufacturing."

The Frozen Shoulder... a thread. A frozen shoulder is one of the most misunderstood conditions in orthopedics. It is not purely a mechanical problem. It is a metabolic one. The shoulder capsule becomes a target of systemic inflammation, hormonal disruption, and glycemic dysfunction. Most people, and some surgeons, still treat it as if something is stuck and just needs to be loosened... Properly managing this and the contributors is essential to resolving it.
