Ralph Pomeroy was from Quinwood, West Virginia. In October 1952 he was 22 years old, a machine gunner with Company E, 31st Infantry, 7th Infantry Division, fighting on Triangle Hill. On October 15, his platoon had just taken a key piece of ground. Pomeroy set up his machine gun at the end of a trench on the forward slope to guard the platoon's flank. The Chinese came up a ravine that led straight to his gun. Pomeroy opened fire and tore into them, breaking up the assault. So the Chinese turned their artillery and mortars on him, trying to wipe out his position. He stayed on the gun through all of it. Then a mortar round exploded beside him. He was badly wounded, and the blast wrecked his gun mount. So Pomeroy pulled the hot, heavy machine gun off the broken mount, cradled it in his arms, and walked forward into the enemy, firing as he went. He was hit again. He kept going. He fired until he ran out of ammunition, about ten feet from the Chinese. Then he used the machine gun as a club and fought them hand to hand until he was killed. His platoon held. Ralph Pomeroy received the Medal of Honor posthumously. Today a US Navy cargo ship, the USNS Pomeroy, carries his name.
