I guess this is why DistroKid is deleting music right now with little or short notice to the artists..
The UMG lawsuit (context, not a deletion order)
On September 15, 2026, Universal Music Group, Capitol Records, and Capitol CMG sued DistroKid in Delaware federal court (UMG Recordings Inc. v. DistroKid LLC, No. 1:26-cv-01156). The complaint alleges DistroKid runs an “AI-slop pipeline” and distributes infringing tracks. Claims include:
- Nearly 12 million tracks delivered to one major streaming service in six months, said to be more than half of that service’s intake.
- High-volume accounts such as “Lofi Chill” (4,562 tracks in a year), “Chill Flow Radio,” and “Mellow Vibes Radio.”
- Continued distribution of tracks after rights conflicts, plus unlicensed remixes, speed-altered versions, and samples of UMG recordings (exhibits list 1,000 examples, called “the tip of the iceberg”).
UMG wants damages and an order to pull infringing tracks and terminate repeat infringers. DistroKid has disputed the allegations, saying it takes copyright protection and fraud prevention seriously. The case is early; DistroKid’s answer deadline was extended into December 2026. Nothing in the public docket so far orders a broad takedown of ordinary independent music.
