thanks @GerardoMunck and @palmer_rubin for highlighting this work, a labour of love that arises from discussions in graduate school seminars twenty years earlier.
Cardoso & Faletto proposed a historical-structural approach to the study of development. And this article by @dnaseemullah discusses the political economy of development & calls for a revision & updating of this approach. An interesting read. Open access: sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

Despite significant differences in context, their playbooks reveal a global appeal of right-wing populism in channeling discontent across the world today. @dnaseemullah and Pradeep Chibber explain this eloquently in their recently published book: global.oup.com/academic/prod… 5/5

Donald #Trump and #Prabowo Subianto share striking similarities as right-wing populist leaders. Both built their political brands on nationalism, strongman personas, and promises to upend the establishment. Here’s a quick breakdown: 🧵 #populism #indonesia #UnitedStates 1/5

The danger of a two-party system is something when you just want to vote for "change" you get fascism by accident if that's the only other option.
It’s a distinction without a difference but we may spend years sorting out the degree to which voters affirmatively wanted a far-right strongman vs just wanted to kick out the incumbent party and didn’t understand or care what they were replacing it with

🧵A few thoughts in advance of the US election. The Democrats persist in thinking a technocratic and managerial approach to politics is sufficient to overcome the political system’s legitimation crisis. 1/10

Atif Mian notes that a surge in foreign investment in Pakistan in 2015 did not result in higher total investment but rather slightly lower total investment. It turns out that foreign investment doesn't always benefit the economy, as most analysts assume. The type of foreign investment and its impact on the balance of payments also matter. atifmian.com/p/the-myth-of-f…

This is not to say that colonial institutions aren't impactful! Far from it. And AJR deserves a lot of credit for highlighting these and their impcts, while bringing history back in in a particular way. But it's not the only way, and their approach, like any, has +s and -s. /fin
