After more than a year of getting burned with MoE gotchas, I finally sat down and wrote the guide I wish existed.
Every paper skips the messy production details. This fills those gaps. No theory without implementation.
cerebras.ai/moe-guide
Let's talk about MoE:
🔶 How many experts should you use?
🔶 How does dynamic routing actually behave in production?
🔶 How do you debug a model that won’t train?
🔶 What does 8x7B actually mean for memory and compute?
🔶 What hardware optimizations matter for sparse models?
Mixture of Experts (MoE) is changing how the biggest AI models are built — but it’s still hard to get right.
That's why we are launching a new MoE 101 series, led by @dmsobol to bridge the gap between theory and practice.
Dive in to our MoE guide: cerebras.ai/moe-guide
super proud of our partners in crime @IFM_AI for launching the series of these strong models. especially want to highlight how glad i am working along with folks committed to open sourcing so many details of the recipe. more to come soon 🔥
Introducing K2 Horizon: a connected fleet of six foundation models ranging from 0.9 billion to 375 billion parameters.
- Frontier performance: Across coding and agentic tasks, K2 Horizon delivers top-tier performance in every size class—with the 0.9B, 3.7B and 7B models setting new state of the art at their respective scales.
- Radical openness: K2 Horizon represents the largest fully open-source model launch in AI history. The fully open code, training data and recipes are a significant step forward in transparency.

Super excited to be a part of the @aiDotEngineer for the 2nd year in a row! This time its Singapore! I've never been before, and really looking forward to meeting new people/discussing research. Please DM me if you have tips on what to visit or want to grab a coffee!
PS If you want to chat about MoEs, chances that we will see each other are even higher 🙃
we're stoked to have @dmsobol from @cerebras speaking at @aiDotEngineer in singapore!
daria designed mixture-of-experts (MoE) models, helping models like Qwen3 scale to trillions of parameters without scaling compute

this week felt like attending a big ai conference, except that it wasn't one. i just kept meeting incredible people, getting invited to speak, and hanging out with my researchy (and not only!) friends.
it started with my talk at south park commons on how we are scaling towards AGI with MoEs (thanks @yaroslavvb for inviting me!). I challenged myself to make it more inspirational than my typical research oriented discussion. Seeing so many people asking questions afterward felt amazing (exhausting, but happy-exhausting!)
then i had dinner with @yaroslavvb, @achowdhery, @V_Vanhoucke, Illia Polosukhin, @Thom_Wolf, @howdymj, Eugen Chebotar, @slaterstich, Alexander Skidanov, and @lukaszkaiser (thanks @ekang426 for the invite!). I loved how everyone thinks about their post AGI self. So many people come back to their childhood hobbies, except for @Thom_Wolf who is certain @huggingface will still be around too 🤗
my main takeaway from this week is seeing people in person is so much more exciting than knowing them from their research/career online. People talk about everything beyond work, and you suddenly become friends who share hobbies or discover new ones together (@mint0themax and @howdymj lets convince @yaroslavvb to go line dancing with us!)
So excited, thanks for having me ❤️
Happy to host @dmsobol at @spc next Tue. She leads Mixture of Experts training at @cerebras and will tell us everything she knows about MoEs luma.com/moe-daria
8th Neural scaling workshop at @NeurIPSConf is wrapped!
Some observations 🧵
1/ @darkproger
(OpenAI) shared how gpt-oss was built and how to efficiently run 128 experts on a single h100. This was a significant move from OpenAI in the open-weights community.
2/ @waterluffy (MBZUAI) detailed how to optimize training LLMs and how to fight instabilities in training. As a community we are closing the gaps between open-source and closed source models, which is exciting.
3/ @mciccone_AI
(Vector Institute) showed how academia can solve scarce compute problem by federating Europe's scattered public clusters. I personally think this is going to be super impactful as there is a ton of abandoned hardware not being used bc there is no physical connection.
4/ @aurickq (Snowflake) presented Arctic inference and how suffix tree cache can generate 4x speedups (now available on
@vllm_project!) without losing the quality.
5/ I shared how we at @cerebras think about MoE models and where the efficiency gains are. MoEs are compute efficient, but not parameter efficient. They introduce a lot of redundancy that post-training needs to deal with. This is why looking at expert merging, pruning and quantization is important.
6/ @JustinLin610 (Qwen) shared how his team is approaching scaling models to higher intelligence. knowledge, code, math, context all matter. Make risky bets to win! Looks like NSA does not work, so don't use that :) Junyang is super down to earth and honest. Really appreciate your insights!
7/ Eric Sather (Cerebras) showed how expert merging leads to collapsed representations in MoE models, which hurts quality. Pruning should be your go-to strategy.
8/ @irinarish (CERC-AAI UdeM Lab/Mila/42.com) shared her students' work on inference optimizations. Looks like GPT-3 moment for time series models is yet to come!
9/ Ayush Kaushal (Nolano AI/Mila) discussed with us how to scale ternary models. What are the similarities with LLMs and how ternary can be more beneficial during the inference time. Was very insightful for me, would def read the paper in detail.
Meta highlights on "Sovereign AI" panel with reps from US, UAE, Canada, Armenia, Japan, Korea: "Sovereign" means different things. It's independence from other countries, capability, and benefits for citizens.
@sarahookr explained how low-resource languages benefit from popular ones through data scaling, but model capacity limits how many languages fit. Hrant Khachatrian noted Armenia's students now have more compute than MIT students, enabling cross-country collabs. @keunwoochoi shared how Korea's open-source contributions are critical for their government strategy.
Meta highlights on "AI: Show me the money" panel with reps across academia and industry. Is AI profitable? looks like it can be. @dylan522p and @swyx both agree that we already see profit in coding apps if you're #1. @tri_dao advises hw companies to make risky bets to compete with nvidia. @irinarish noted AGI has many definitions and is hard to optimize for, so it makes more sense to optimize software while developing AI capabilities to generate profits (@swyx).
After this @yaroslavvb doesn’t want to go to parties together 💔
In 2011 I joined Google OCR team and saw a collection of image recognition pipelines and components barely working together.
I took Andrew Ng's class, got excited about DL, and drove the first production deployment of Deep Learning at Google, hiring @goodfellow_ian in process. Initial push-back, "Yann LeCun tried Deep Learning in the 80s, it doesn't really work, help us improve SIFT instead".
Today I feel the same way I did in in 2011. Things barely work. Last week @dmsobol whipped out laptop during dinner to check on her training run. Time for another refactor.
I am heading to Osaka for @scahpcasia2026!
My talk on MoEs is on Wed, Jan 28th | 3:30pm (15:30) | Session 2.3 tpc.dev/tpc-track-at-sca-hpc…
Look forward to discuss how we’ve solved the all-to-all bottleneck to scale MoEs to trillion-parameters on Cerebras hardware.
Also, I'm leading our MoE work at @cerebras. If you want to join the team, talk over coffee, or suggest what I should visit in Japan, DM me! 💜
