BREAKING: Tennessee death row inmate Christa Pike is still alive after 2 lethal injections, according to her lawyer.
At 8:26 p.m. local time, witnesses said executioners had "injected both syringes of lethal injection chemicals and Pike is still alive and snoring," her lawyers said.
Authorities appeared to give Pike two doses of pentobarbital, but she was still alive more than 40 minutes after the last dose. Officials then escorted media witnesses out of the area, and the Tennessee Department of Corrections said it was unable to immediately provide information about what happened.
The attempted execution comes after the Supreme Court vacated a last-minute stay that had temporarily spared Pike from becoming the first woman executed in Tennessee since the early 1800s.

🚨BREAKING UPDATE: Tennessee was UNABLE to complete the execution of Christa Gail Pike tonight!!
She was given two doses of pentobarbital but stayed awake and was reportedly snoring more than 40 minutes AFTER the second dose!
At 8:53 p.m., the media witnesses were escorted out. The Tennessee Department of Correction officials said they could not immediately explain what happened.
Her attorneys filed emergency motions seeking to stop the execution, arguing that she was experiencing “unnecessary agony.”
As of now, Pike has NOT been executed!

Earlier today, the Sixth Circuit issued a last-minute stay only an hour before she was scheduled to be executed. Tennessee immediately appealed.
The deadline is the end of TODAY! Her attorneys said that if Tennessee doesn’t execute her by the end of Wednesday, the Tennessee Supreme Court would have to set a NEW execution date!’
The Supreme Court has now lifted that stay, allowing the execution to move forward.
Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented.

According to The Tennessean, Pike’s attorneys say two syringes of lethal-injection drugs were administered, but she was still alive, breathing, and “snoring” afterward.
Attorney Kelley Gleason says Randy Spivey stepped out of the death chamber and called her with the update.
Pike’s legal team is now reportedly rushing an emergency motion to the Tennessee Supreme Court and saying she needs immediate medical care.
If this account is accurate, this is no longer just a delay — the execution process had already begun, and something appears to have gone very wrong.

The US Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed Tennessee’s execution of Christa Gail Pike to move forward after a last-minute stay.
Earlier Wednesday, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals voted 2-1 to halt the execution to determine whether Pike’s allegations of childhood sexual abuse were taken into consideration during her death penalty sentencing.
Tennessee’s Attorney General immediately appealed to the Supreme Court. A few hours later, the Supreme Court allowed Tennessee to go forward with the execution.
This is the First time Tennessee will have executed a woman in 200 years.
