Someone has to say it: Elon Musk has lied for 27 years about his credentials. He does not have a BS in Physics, or any technical field. Did not get into a PhD program. Dropped out in 1995 & was illegal. Later, investors quietly arranged a diploma - but not in science. 🧵1/
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The University of Pennsylvania considers Musk to be a graduate of both the economics department and the physics department. "Elon Musk earned a B.A. in physics and a B.S. in economics from the University of Pennsylvania. The degrees were awarded on May 19, 1997." -Penn, 2019 snopes.com/fact-check/mus…

As Twitter 2.0 begins its journey, I have found myself wondering how best to define what Twitter 1.0 was... and then I remember that @DougStanhope visited TwitterHQ in 2013 and wrote a lovely little thing in his blog: doug-stanhope.squarespace.co…

Twitter 1.0 *was* hardcore engineering and more. It was giving your company more than 40 hours a week not because it was expected, but because they treated us like adults, with respect. They gave us a mission and the autonomy and ownership to contribute to it as best we could.

It was the best damn job I ever had. With the finest coworkers. And I'm so proud of everyone who took a stand today 🫡💙

Never actually counted the total number of services. But number required to generate the home timeline is closer to 200 than 1200. (go/zipkin/b9193db194f0abab)

You might not like it, but this is what peak hardcore engineering looks like
Btw, I’d like to apologize for Twitter being super slow in many countries. App is doing >1000 poorly batched RPCs just to render a home timeline!

Khodaryonok published a pessimistic prognosis about the Russian invasion of Ukraine back on February 3, long before it started. Many pundits expected a quick Russian victory. But the one who actually worked in the Russian General Staff didn't believe in it nvo.ng.ru/realty/2022-02-03/…

Nailed it.
I've now been asked multiple times for my take on Elon's offer for Twitter. So fine, this is what I think about that. I will assume the takeover succeeds, and he takes Twitter private. (I have little knowledge/insight into how actual takeover battles work or play out) (long 🧵)

I love how interviewing an engineer is like "recite your whole computer science degree" and "solve a puzzle while i watch you type" while interviewing a manager is "tell me some anecdotes from work" and "how many people currently report to you?"
