AJK: REPORTS OF FIRING AND CLASHES AS ANGER SPREADS TO MUZAFFARABAD
Reports from Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), describe clashes between protesters and Pakistani Rangers following the crackdown on Rawalakot’s months-long rights movement.
Students and young people have reportedly taken to the streets in solidarity with Rawalakot. Accounts describe burning tyres and roadblocks in Upper Plate and Chela Bandi, shuttered businesses, and confrontations with security forces.
There are serious allegations of live ammunition and tear gas being used against demonstrators, alongside arrests reportedly involving minors. These allegations demand urgent, independent investigation.
In Rawalakot, Rangers and Frontier Corps personnel reportedly seized the bus terminal, where women had maintained a prolonged sit-in. Thousands of protesters are said to remain around Umar Farooq Chowk despite continuing security operations.
Reports allege nine deaths and 26 injuries during the latest three-day crackdown, and a cumulative toll of 155 deaths—including 17 women and a child, Shayan Azhar—during approximately 150 days of unrest. These figures, and allegations of drone strikes and RPG use, require independent verification.
The authorities must publish casualty records, disclose the whereabouts of detainees, ensure medical access and admit independent journalists and observers.
A rights movement cannot be resolved through collective punishment. Clearing protest sites by force does not resolve the grievances that brought people there.
The military-led establishment must answer for its decisions. AJK’s people deserve protection, dignity and meaningful political dialogue.

The chairman and founding members of JAAC have been forcibly disappeared for over three months. Tens of our people have been martyred. Many are in prisons and the notorious Muzaffarabad torture camp.
The 12 seats be damned; it is not about that anymore.
I repeat, there is a massive military operation against civilians in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir underway and there is a total blackout on Pakistani (and international) media.
🚨 UPDATE FROM RAWALAKOT (Pakistan-administered Kashmir)
New video has just been received from the ground. The video is yet to be independently verified.
I spoke to two people currently in Rawalakot. On the call, gunshots were clearly audible. The situation remains extremely tense.
Heavy security presence continues around protest sites. Residents are reporting ongoing firing and uncertainty.
We urge independent journalists, human rights organisations and international media to urgently verify the situation and report accurately.

Had AJK’s political leadership shown even a fraction of backbone, the Pakistani state could not have treated Kashmir as its political plaything. Decades of spinelessness,& bootlicking have cost Kashmir dearly & now you appeal to the very powers you failed to challenge? Shame.
