A 2-year-old boy was strapped inside his stroller when it rolled down a hill and plunged into a deep pond. As the stroller sank underwater, his grandmother was desperately struggling to save another child, unable to reach the little boy trapped below. It happened in Carmel, Indiana, where 15-year-old Maddox Larger and his 14-year-old brother Grant were fishing nearby when they noticed a family struggling in the water. The brothers immediately rushed to help, managing to get the grandmother and a 4-year-old child to safety. But their relief was short-lived when they discovered that the youngest child was still missing, trapped underwater inside his stroller. Maddox went straight back into the pond, searching water approximately eight feet deep until he located the submerged stroller. He managed to pull it to the surface and unbuckle the little boy, but when he brought him out of the water, he realized something was terribly wrong. The toddler wasn’t breathing. Remembering first aid he’d learned at school, Maddox began delivering back blows, desperately trying to get the little boy breathing again. After those terrifying moments, the toddler finally began to breathe. What started as an ordinary day of fishing ended with two teenage brothers saving three lives. At just 14 and 15 years old, Maddox and Grant showed incredible courage when it mattered most. They deserve some serious recognition.

A teenage girl was drowning 100 yards offshore, and the man trying to save her couldn’t swim. Then he grabbed his fishing drone and attempted a rescue nobody on that beach could have imagined. It happened at Pensacola Beach, Florida, where Andrew Smith was preparing to go fishing when a desperate girl ran up asking for help. Her friend had been caught in a powerful rip current and was being pulled farther out to sea. Because of a medical condition, Andrew couldn’t safely swim out to her. But he realized his fishing drone might be able to reach her. He quickly attached a flotation device and flew it toward the struggling girl, only for strong winds to ruin his first attempt. With the girl growing exhausted, a stranger handed Andrew another flotation device. He launched the drone again, carefully lowered it toward her, and this time, she grabbed hold. She climbed onto the flotation device and stayed afloat until emergency rescuers arrived and brought her safely to shore. Remarkably, Andrew hadn’t even planned to go fishing that day. A friend had convinced him to come along, putting him in the right place at exactly the right moment. The girl’s grateful father later called him her guardian angel. Sometimes being a hero isn’t about having all the right abilities. It’s about refusing to give up when someone needs you. Some stories are simply too incredible not to share. This is one of them.

🚨HERO: On April 22, 2018, James Shaw Jr. walked into a Waffle House in Antioch, Tennessee, expecting nothing more than breakfast. Minutes later, gunfire erupted inside the restaurant. Four people had already been killed, and the gunman was still holding an AR-15-style rifle. Most people ran. Shaw made a split-second decision. Unarmed, he charged the shooter, grabbed the rifle by its burning-hot barrel with his bare hands, and fought until he wrested the weapon away. His hands were severely burned, but he did not let go. The gunman fled. Shaw’s actions almost certainly prevented further loss of life. The country called him a hero. Shaw refused the title. He said he was simply trying to survive and protect the people around him. Instead of seeking attention, he launched a fundraiser that raised more than $200,000 for the victims’ families. He continued speaking about healing and supporting communities affected by violence. The headlines have long since faded. Many no longer remember the name. But courage like James Shaw Jr.’s should never be forgotten.

Our Premier team competed today vs the London Correctional Institute Falcons. It was a very competitive game and it was really fun to spend about an hour afterwards having conversations about Jesus and getting to know the inmates on a personal level.

🇺🇸 Meet H.S. footballer Wesly Lowery, who asked his friend since first grade, Nevaeh Hall, to homecoming. Nevaeh has Down syndrome, and Wesly is the team's quarterback... but they couldn't care less what anyone thinks about their uncommon coupling! This makes my heart happy and gives me a remaining shred of faith in humanity! ❤️ Writer: Jamie

When Dave Bing was five years old, he was playing with a homemade hobby horse made out of two sticks. He tripped and drove a rusty nail into his left eye. There was no emergency surgery available to his family. The vision in that eye never fully came back. He went on to lead the National Basketball Association in scoring. His father Hasker was a bricklayer and a Baptist deacon. His mother Juanita cleaned houses. They lived in Washington, D.C., and his dad called him Duke because he wanted his son to be top dog. People told him he was too small for basketball. He was also, functionally, playing with one good eye. He went to Syracuse anyway, roomed with a kid named Jim Boeheim, and wore number 22 because that was Elgin Baylor's number and he had watched Baylor play as a boy. He averaged 28.4 points as a senior, fifth in the entire country, and became Syracuse's first consensus All-American in 39 years. Detroit took him second overall in 1966. He was Rookie of the Year. The next season he led the NBA in scoring at 27.1 points a game. Seven All-Star games. All-Star Game MVP in 1976. Two-time All-NBA First Team. The Pistons retired his number 21. The Hall of Fame took him in 1990 and the league put him on both the 50th and 75th anniversary teams. In 1971 he detached a retina and missed two and a half months. The eyes again. He played 12 seasons and averaged 20.3 points. Now here is the part that makes him different from every other Hall of Famer. When he retired, he did not open a car dealership or take a broadcasting job. He took a job in a steel processing warehouse for $35,000 a year. A Hall of Fame basketball player, on the floor of a warehouse, learning the steel business from the bottom because he intended to own one. He stayed two years. Then in 1980 he opened Bing Steel with four employees, $80,000 of his own money, and $250,000 in loans, in a rented warehouse in Detroit. In six months he lost all of it. Every dollar of the startup capital, gone. He did not quit. He pivoted the whole company from manufacturing into steel processing and distribution, got General Motors as his first major client, and in year two did $4.2 million in revenue. By 1984 President Reagan was handing him National Minority Small Business Person of the Year. By 1985 he had two plants, 63 employees and $40 million in revenue. It became the Bing Group, one of the largest Black-owned businesses in America. And then in 2009, at 65 years old, Dave Bing ran for Mayor of Detroit. He won. And he walked into one of the worst municipal financial situations in American history. A $332 million accumulated deficit. A city hemorrhaging people and money. He took no salary his first year. Here is the honest part, and it matters. It did not work. He cut a thousand positions, tore down 6,700 abandoned houses and fought the city council constantly, and in 2013 the state installed an emergency manager over him and Detroit filed the largest municipal bankruptcy in United States history. His approval rating fell to 14 percent. He did not run again. Some jobs cannot be won. But look at the whole life. A kid who lost the use of an eye to a rusty nail, who was told he was too small, led the NBA in scoring. Then went and swept a warehouse floor to learn an industry, lost everything in six months, and built a $40 million company anyway. Then he took the hardest job in America because it was his city. He started the Bing Youth Initiative in 2014 to mentor kids in Detroit. He is still at it. For more stories like this, follow us on any platform @thesportsontap

The message at Grace Family Church this morning was given by Sean McDowell. He spoke on why we can trust the Bible to be the absolute truth as given by God. Amazingly I saw his father Josh McDowell give the same message when I was a senior at the U of Minnesota almost 50 years ago. More Than A Carpenter! It was life changing for me.
