Indigenous protesters smeared red urucum seed paste on the faces of business leaders who are pushing for the construction of a railway in the Amazon that will destroy the environment for numerous communities. At a public consultation event, these business leaders had come to endorse the Ferrogrão railway, which will cause environmental damage affecting fourteen Indigenous communities in the Amazon. Representatives from each of those communities came to voice their opposition. Brazil’s Ministry of Transport will make the final decision. However, it comes just as there’s growing concern about climate disaster following the deadly floods in Rio Grande do Sul, a region bordering Uruguay, where over 100 people have died and well over 100,000 have been displaced.
