It was disheartening to learn that 43% of investable funds in Zimbabwe is tied up in property, while more than a thousand pension funds have collapsed alongside deindustrialisation. Then I learnt that Zambia’s annual electricity consumption is now 1.5x Zimbabwe’s. In the 1990s, Zimbabwe consumed roughly twice as much electricity as Zambia.
Zimbabwe’s aggregate consumption remains remarkably resilient, driven in large part by diaspora remittances. But it is time we focused on production and industry.
How do we get pension funds to stop building malls and cluster homes and start funding industry and reindustrialisation?

Today the Ministry of Information Publicity and Broadcasting Services led a media tour in Mashonaland Central on signature infrastructure projects. The tour was headed by the Ministry's Permanent Secretary Mr N. Mangwana and Permanent Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Mashonaland Central Mr Timothy Maregere.
The tour began at Panvert (Pvt) Ltd which is situated in Glendale Mazowe District.The company recently expanded from transport into mineral processing, since launching production on March 11, 2024, the company has manufactured agricultural lime and chicken grit across two sites.Panvert’s Glendale plant currently produces about 90 - 120 tonnes of lime per day, against a full capacity of 180 tonnes per day.To date Panvert has invested US$810,000 in its Glendale plant, with plans to reach US$1.5 million.Total employment currently stands at 121 people, with 90 workers at their Glendale plant and Wise Acres employs around 31 workers.
