When I was preparing for NEET in Delhi, I met a Keralite who had also moved to the city for NEET preparation. We studied at the same coaching institute, and gradually, we got to know each other better. She started telling me about the food, traditional attire, and culture of her state, and I shared mine with her as well. Out of curiosity, I asked her, “I've heard that people in Kerala eat beef and pork.” She replied that not everyone in Kerala eats beef. According to her, it is mostly Muslims, Christians, and Hindus who follow communist ideology who consume it. I then asked her about pork. She said it is consumed less frequently than beef and that Muslims absolutely do not eat it. She even told me that some Hindus who eat beef also avoid pork, believing that consuming it could hurt Muslim sentiments and affect secularism. Coming from a vegetarian family, this was nothing short of a culture shock for me. It made me wonder how much the land of Adi Shankaracharya has changed over the centuries.
