It's been a minute since I last gave out a Critic's Pick at the Times (over a year, in fact). But man, upon rewatching R.T. Thorne’s post-apocalyptic thriller 40 ACRES, it fully grabbed me.

Here's @directedbyRT @MichaelGreyeyes and Danielle Deadwyler on exploring a history of allyship between Black and Indigenous resistance, and the current moment, in a thrilling dystopian coming-of-age tale.

Thank you brother 🙏🏾
Danielle Deadwyler is so good (and intense) in R.T. Thorne's 40 ACRES that I was genuinely concerned about the actress's resting heart rate. theglobeandmail.com/arts/fil…

This isn’t your typical apocalypse flick — it’s personal.
40 Acres is a taut survival thriller centered on a Black & Indigenous family protecting their land after ecological collapse. Deadwyler’s performance is unforgettable.

ALT Poster for the film 40 Acres, featuring a close-up of Danielle Deadwyler’s intense expression in the foreground. Her face is overlaid with a silhouetted group of armed figures standing in a field, with a windmill and cloudy sky in the background. The tagline reads “GET OFF OUR LAND.” Bold red and white text at the bottom includes the title 40 Acres and cast names Danielle Deadwyler, Michael Greyeyes, and Kareem O’Connor.

#40Acres is a very intense and effective post-apocalyptic thriller as well as a surprisingly engaging family drama. Danielle Deadwyler is fantastic as always and Kataem O'Connor is a standout. Definitely the better of the two Deadwyler led genre films this year.

Thank you for supporting our little indie film vs all these studio blockbusters 🙏🏾
After watching “40 Acres” I firmly believe that Danielle Deadwyler is the best actress working today. It’s criminal that she has never even been nominated for an Oscar!
