Imagination is the first stage of supersensible knowledge. When you remember a landscape or invent a scene, you create mental images. These are either reproductions of memory or creations of fantasy. True Imagination is a fully conscious, supersensible form of cognition in which spiritual realities express themselves through living 'images'. Unlike dreams, it does not require a reduction of consciousness. One must remain fully awake, self-aware, and capable of clear, disciplined thinking. How does Imagination arise? The human being possesses spiritual organs of perception that ordinarily remain undeveloped. One of these is the two-petalled lotus flower located between the eyebrows. When its activity turns inward, the capacity for external sensory perception arises. When its astral activity turns outward, the capacity for imaginative perception arises. Imaginative consciousness arises when experiences of the astral body are reflected in the etheric body and brought into consciousness as living images. What ordinarily remains hidden behind physical perception becomes consciously accessible. What does the imaginative world look like? Imagine standing before a plant. Now extract everything perceptible to sight as pure colour, so that the colour floats freely in space. To the clairvoyant, this coulour-form is not a lifeless picture. It becomes animated by spirit — glistening, sparkling, weaving in manifold ways. Each hue expresses the nature or activity of a spiritual being imperceptible to the physical senses. Now imagine this whole sea of interlacing colours — and likewise tone, taste, or smell — as expressions of psychic‑spiritual beings standing behind the sensory world. The imaginative world is not a hallucination of lights. It is the revelation of spiritual activity through lawful pictorial expression. The development requires rigorous thinking and conscious control of one's inner life. The goal is to strengthen awareness until it can remain fully awake beyond ordinary sensory impressions. This marks the first transformation of ordinary cognition into spiritual‑scientific knowledge. The aim is to extend thinking beyond its usual limits — without sacrificing clarity, freedom, or the ability to distinguish truth from illusion. The gateway to higher perception is not sleep, trance, or dream — but intensified wakefulness.
