When Anthropic warns investors in its IPO prospectus that advanced AI could pose “catastrophic or existential risks to humanity,” self-regulation alone won’t cut it.
The stakes demand serious public policy.
Join us Oct. 28 @TheLBJSchool at UT Austin.
I’m glad the Regents spoke out.
At moments like this, we should remember the example we set—and the kind of principled leadership we want future generations to follow.
"When I stood on the sidelines at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium Saturday night and looked up at the seats filled with incredible fans, I saw Longhorns. It’s the same remarkable view I have at graduation ceremonies and anytime I’m on campus. I’m proud to celebrate all our Longhorn students today and every day. Thank you for making us proud." Kevin P. Eltife, Chairman of the UT System Board of Regents

As a Longhorn myself who’s come back to UT as faculty, I see in these students future leaders who will do great things for Texas and our country.
Love the spirit on Forty Acres after Longhorn’s amazing win.

Very timely, welcome step. Key is implementation. Governments’ role will be crucial.
'society must have a say in how this technology is used, and more time for the necessary public deliberations — which pacing the frontier would bring us — is surely a good thing.’
We Must Pace the Frontier: I’ve written a new essay on why the AI industry should slow down, with a three-part plan for doing so.
Anthropic is unilaterally committing to the first of these steps. We’ll provide third-party evaluators with permanent, employee-level access to our systems, so that they can verify adherence to our safety measures, report on incidents, and assess models’ alignment during training.

25 years later, we remember.
This morning, nearly 200 UT students, veterans and visitors from Ohio State gathered at Mike A. Myers Stadium to climb more than 2,000 steps for UT’s annual memorial stair climb. The climb honors those lost on 9/11 and the first responders who climbed the 110 floors of the Twin Towers.

Texas welcomed the data center boom with few guardrails. Now the backlash is growing, and the jobs story is getting harder too.
By Q1 2025, job postings in more AI-exposed occupations in Texas fell by ~8% relative to less-exposed occupations.
How is a small IT firm with $40M in annual revenue supposed to compete with a $400M company for a federal contract specifically set aside for small businesses?
This proposed move by @SBAgov is another step away from the small businesses the agency is supposed to serve.
In our administration, we expanded small-dollar lending and reached rural and underserved businesses too often left behind. SBA should be widening the pathway for small businesses—not making them compete against companies ten times their size.

When I was serving in government, I had the honor of speaking at a swearing-in ceremony for more than one thousand new Americans in Roseville, CA. A moment I could never have imagined when I first arrived in America as an immigrant decades ago.
America’s power has always rested not only in its ideals, but in its capacity to renew them—generation after generation—through people who come here, believe in the promise of this country, and choose to help build it.
For the next 250 years and beyond, what will keep America strong and competitive is our willingness to preserve and renew that promise. Today, let's honor those who came before us, and to keep widening the circle of service and opportunity.
Happy Fourth of July. 🇺🇸
Congratulations to graduating Longhorns! It’s been a privilege to teach and share lessons from my journey—I have learned just as much from you.
Stay grounded in purpose and conviction, and lead with it.
Core memories were made tonight in DKR 🎓

Supporting small business should be a common-sense priority for anyone in a political office, or seeking it. But if you need the data:
Vast majority of voters believe the success of small businesses better for their families than the success of large corporations

Grateful that @HinaRKhar joined us at the UT Austin South Asia Institute to share her perspective on Pakistan’s role in crisis diplomacy in the wake of the U.S.–Iran war.
We’re better for it when we create space for students to engage and ask questions on hard issues.
Grateful @POTUS and everyone at WHCD is safe. Our country cannot yield to political violence. We can, and must, do better.
Deep respect for the law enforcement who put themselves in harm’s way—I’ve seen their commitment up close. We’re safer tonight because of their courage.
Recent weeks have reminded us that diplomacy is more marathon than sprint.
The @UTAustin South Asia Institute hosts @HinaRKhar, former Foreign Minister of Pakistan, for a timely dialogue on Pakistan’s role in mediating between U.S. and Iran—and the prospects for peace.
