Mason Mount was the next candidate for the captaincy until his contract situation started dragging on and we began hearing that he might leave. That was when Reece James emerged as the next best option because of his Cobham ties. That is the only reason he is captain today.
He is not captain material. He doesn’t have the aura or charisma required to lead Chelsea.
Look at Bruno Fernandes at Manchester United. Look at Granit Xhaka against Arsenal last night, getting in the referee’s face and demanding answers. You will never see Reece James doing that. Mason Mount did it several times at Chelsea, even when he wasn’t captain.
If Chelsea want to move forward and have better leadership on the pitch, Alonso must strip Reece of the captain’s armband and hand it to someone who can actually perform the duties of a captain.
