Why do young people think they can't afford a family? The biggest reason is that expectations have absolutely exploded. Two charts show the astronomical consumption expectations of Gen Z compared to previous generations. (Thread!)

A BIG THANK YOU 🇺🇸 (apologies for the very long post) Tonight we head home after what has been the trip of a lifetime for me and Mrs T. When we landed in Chicago four weeks ago we had an itinerary, an RV booking and some World Cup tickets. As I sit here in the same airport waiting for our flight home (and for England v Mexico to begin) I realise what we didn’t plan for was how much we’d fall in love with America. We’ve driven over 3,000 miles across 12 incredible states, cruised down Route 66, encountered tornadoes and heatwaves, camped under the stars, wandered through world-class cities, explored small towns we’d never heard of before, eaten some of the best barbecue, Cajun food, deep dish, cheesesteaks and burgers we’ve ever had, sampled fantastic local beers, celebrated the 4th of July in Philadelphia, spotted license plates from 41 states and watched 5 unforgettable World Cup matches alongside fans from all over the world. But what has made this trip truly special hasn’t been the places. It’s been the people. To everyone who stopped to chat, welcomed us, recommended a restaurant, suggested a hidden gem, answered one of my many questions on here, shared advice, wished us safe travels, or simply took an interest in our journey… THANK YOU 🫶. Like Keith from Louisiana, who I chatted with whilst filling up with gas at Buc-ee’s in Leeds, AL. Keith owns a couple of farms and took the time to educate me on the plans for huge data centers in his home state and also the origins of the Eisenhower interstate system. Thank you Keith. Or the lady from South Carolina who we chatted to whilst sititng on the bleachers at the Field of Dreams. She was also on a road trip with her family and whose husband had briefly left that trip to fly to LA to watch the USMNT’s opening game. And so many more encounters like these along the way. The warmth, humour and generosity we’ve experienced everywhere we’ve gone has been overwhelming. I’ve learnt that many Americans feel their country has a negative reputation elsewhere but for us that couldn’t be further from the truth. Everywhere we have been there has been nothing but friendliness, good humour and love. In my experience social media can often feel divided, but over the past few weeks our experience on here has reminded me just how brilliant it can be. I’ve loved the conversations, the recommendations, the laughs, and getting to share this adventure with so many people. This World Cup trip has given us memories we’ll treasure forever, but it’s the people we’ve met, both in person and online, that we’ll remember most. Thank you, America, for your hospitality, your kindness, and for making us feel so welcome. We leave with incredible memories, phones full of photos, suitcases that are heavier than when we arrived, and already a growing list of places we want to come back and visit. This won’t be goodbye. Just… see you next time. 🇺🇸🤍 (and I’m forever sorry for mistaking biscuits and gravy for scones and mushrooms)

I much prefer these World Cup tourists who love our country to the Ivy League Madrassa-educated white elite natives who hate our country.

This is one of the best illustrations of what socialism (in any form) does to the poor. It promises a ladder of programs & benefits but can’t lift people out of poverty. No country on earth has made the poor better off under socialist governments.

🇺🇸 We owe America a MASSIVE apology! These European World Cup visitors are flooding the internet with pure love for the USA – and honestly, same. Yeah, the government’s a circus… but the PEOPLE? Genuine, kind, generous, and full of heart. This is the America we know and love. Don’t let the noise fool you – the real magic is in the everyday folks making this country incredible. Who else is proud to be American today? Drop a ❤️ if you’re team USA!

Two British guys stumble into peak America on a Saturday morning in Nashville: Kids running a real lemonade stand (saving up for a scooter 🛵), Little League baseball, driving range, flags everywhere. Their minds are blown — ‘This is what the country is actually about.’ Who else grew up with these exact summer mornings? Lemonade stands, ball games, and pure small-town freedom? 🇺🇸

Texas. Jesus what a place. I often see Americans say on here “the European mind can’t comprehend..” and they’re are completely right. From the scale of everything to the true southern hospitality. I loved every second and hope to be back soon. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Australian tourist blown away by American hospitality and generosity “American hospitality is unmatched.” “He then invited me into his house, is now giving me a private tour and taking me to breakfast on the water on his boat. This is incredible. You guys don’t understand this is not normal in any other country.”

Something good is happening at this World Cup. The Scots turned up. The English turned up. The Norwegians turned up. They sang their songs, got stuck in, and the Americans loved them for it. Glasgow and Boston are getting twinned off the back of it. For 30 years we’ve been told to view the US as some sort of Great Satan — all imperialism and orange-man clichés. Not everyone buys it of course, but enough do. And then Europeans actually go, and find a place that feels familiar. Makes sense to them. A bit richer, a bit further ahead, but recognisably ours. Settled by Europeans, still deeply European in its bones. There’s a gathering-of-the-clans feeling to it. Old neighbours discovering they still like the same songs, the same drink, the same daft humour, and genuinely enjoying each other’s company. None of it’s a surprise, really. It’s just been buried under so much politics that we forgot we were allowed to enjoy it. Good to be reminded.

Our 10 days in the Midwest come to a close. Now we move on to Texas for the next part of our great US World Cup Road Trip 🇺🇸 Things I’ve learnt along the way: - Your weather is not to be messed with - Your sunsets are stunning - Your beer is fantastic - Your barbecue is delicious - Your scenery is beautiful - Folk have STRONG opinions on barbecue and gas prices - Biscuits and gravy are definitely NOT scones and mushrooms But above all… the people are amazing, true salt of the earth folk and remind me of back home in Yorkshire (a high compliment) Thank you Midwesterners 🤍

The World Cup has turned America into a discovery channel for the rest of the world. And they are not handling it well. In the best possible way. Here is what they are discovering: Free public restrooms. Europeans pay every time. Free water at every restaurant. Just appears. Free refills. Coffee. Sodas. Iced tea. Unlimited. Free chips and salsa before you even order. Free warm bread with dinner. Ice in drinks like civilized people. Air conditioning everywhere. Not a moral debate. A fact. Parking lots attached to the actual place you are going. Drive throughs where the food comes to the car while you sit in it. Ranch dressing by the gallon. Tex-Mex that cannot be explained only experienced. Dental care that actually works. Buccee’s. There are no words for Buccee’s. Then they found the grocery stores. Five of them within one mile. Each one the size of an aircraft hangar. Burgers. Steaks. Brisket. Ribs. Pulled pork. Lamb. Veal. Every cut of every animal ever domesticated by human civilization available in one refrigerated aisle at ten in the morning on a Tuesday. The Germans stood in the meat section for forty five minutes. In silence. Processing. They finally understand why we do not have trains. We have roads wide enough for the cars we actually drive. Parking lots the size of small European countries. Airports in every city worth visiting. Why would we need trains. The Germans are taking ranch home by the bottle. The Dutch found queso and briefly lost the ability to speak. The Japanese are photographing HEB like it is the Louvre. The Czechs are weeping in West, Texas. Welcome to America! The greatest country on earth.
