Former CIA officer John Kiriakou, on Indonesia 1965 : > "they literally crafted this narrative that was absolutely untrue, that a Communist Party was going to rise up and kill everyone" > "military ended up clashing with the Communist Party in Indonesia and one million people died" > "Several documents of the CIA actually say that it was a model of an operation" The CIA's own 1968 research study called the killings "one of the worst mass murders of the 20th century". The agency knew exactly what it was looking at. Then Washington backed Suharto for 32 years. I keep coming back to this one because it's the case that shaped everything after it, from Chile to the colour revolutions of today. If the people who ran it called it a success, what exactly were they measuring ?
