Here is the first part of my unfinished Shostakovich graphic novel. There are no pictures; it's just the text. If you want a look, look now because I might change my mind and remove it.

Have absolutely no time for academics tweeting from their offices about how the burning of the symbols of the most stable and peaceful societies in human history is righteous and good ackchyually
I have studied many terrible periods in history, but in reading about Mao's China for the A Level I'm teaching, I keep coming across details that leave me in disbelief at the casual disregard for humanity. And people generally just don't know about the period.
Responses to this are as you'd expect, but I always wonder if there's a word for these kind of reactions. It's a kind of safteyism, but the contention is that children must be so weighed down by issues and traumas that any kind of basic classroom expectation is a kind of abuse.
If a student doesn’t have a pen, don’t ‘just give them a pen’.
Instead you could:
-Give them a pen and take note. If it happens again, follow up with a consequence
-Give them a purple pen so it’s easy to show parents days equipment isn’t right
-Teach them how to locate a pen
-Teach them how to pack properly for the day
-Privately, ask if there are any reasons why they aren’t ready
-Record any equipment issues, daily
-Teach them why being organised matters.
-Teach them to bring three pens a day.
Don’t ’just give them a pen.’ You are not Stationery Santa. Don’t teach them to be helpless. Show them you care by teaching them to be independent.
Of course some children arrived at class unprepared due to issues relating the ADHD, or home life, or other very understandable reasons. But the behaviour can also be actively or passively disruptive, and motivated by a disrespect for the educational project.
I don't know if people really understand the tech takeover happening in schools, but students and teachers everywhere are being forced to do everything through screens that they used to do without, because tech companies have found another area of life to sell as a subscription.
Wondering why publishers think getting their successful authors to self-record low-quality video promos for social media looks anything other than cheap and unserious.
Wow!

All this fuss about Havergal Brian reminds me of this, which I wrote a long while back. devilstrillblog.blogspot.com…
