Kenneth Stumpf was a Wisconsin kid working in a factory when the draft pulled him into the Army in 1965. By the spring of 1967 he was a specialist four and a squad leader in the 25th Infantry Division, and on April 25, 1967, near Duc Pho, he did something that took the kind of nerve most people cannot imagine. His company ran into a fortified North Vietnamese bunker complex as it approached a village, and in the opening burst of fire, three men from Stumpf's own squad were cut down and left lying in the open, right in front of an enemy machine gun that was still firing. They were as good as dead where they lay, and reaching them meant walking into the muzzle of that gun. Stumpf went anyway. He left cover, ran out through the fire that was concentrated right on him, reached the first wounded man, picked him up, and carried him back to friendly lines. Then he turned around and did it again for the second man. And then, incredibly, a third time, out into the same killing ground and back, until all three of his wounded were safe. Three separate trips into a machine gun's field of fire to bring back three men one at a time. And he was not finished. Stumpf then organized the rest of his squad and led them in knocking out two of the enemy bunkers. The third bunker was still holding up the whole advance, so he took it on himself, crawling forward alone under machine gun fire until he was close enough to destroy it with grenades. President Johnson gave Kenneth Stumpf the Medal of Honor in 1968. And here is the measure of the man. He did not treat the medal as a ticket out. He went back to Vietnam for two more tours, three in all, and then stayed in the Army for a full career, retiring as a sergeant major after 29 years of service. He went home to Wisconsin and lived until 2022. A drafted factory worker who, on one afternoon near Duc Pho, walked into the same machine gun three times because three of his men were lying out there and he was not going to leave any of them behind.
