The students were wrong to use AI as a shortcut instead of learning. But that's not the full story.
Universities have a role too. It's not enough to punish misuse, they need to teach students how to use AI ethically. Without losing academic integrity. Without becoming too dependent on it.
AI should sharpen thinking, not replace effort.
We need students who can think for themselves and use AI wisely, not ones who can't function without it.

Transformer-based LLMs waste compute by processing every possible relationship between words (standard attention).
Only a small fraction actually matter.
