Bob Gibson started Game 7 of the World Series three times. He won in 1964 on two days of rest, won again in 1967 and hit a home run in it, and lost in 1968 to Mickey Lolich and the Tigers. The Cardinals have won 11 winner take all Game 7s in all, the most of any franchise.
The Yankees and Dodgers went into 2026 tied for second with six. Eight of the Cardinals' wins came in the World Series itself, more than any other team has.

St. Louis had a seven game lead with 12 to play in 2006 and then lost seven in a row.
Houston got within half a game. The Cardinals limped in at 83 and 78, the worst record any World Series champion had ever had.
Then they beat the Padres, beat the Mets in seven when rookie closer Adam Wainwright froze Carlos Beltrán with a curveball with the bases loaded, and took Detroit in five. David Eckstein was World Series MVP.
Which champion had the toughest road?
