Search continues for casualties after a #landslide at a #gold mine at Chinese-owned (Wanguo International Mining) Gold Ridge mine. A remote area, tough to report on this disaster but a hospital worker confirmed to @KirstyLNeedham some have passed away.

"If you read a book in 2025—just one book—you belong to an endangered species." This made me sad.
(Someone could probably publish a thesis about how a drop in reading has led to a drop in overall empathy.)

#BREAKING: Hong Kong has rejected a bill granting limited rights to same-sex couples whose unions are registered abroad.
The 89-member Legislative Council voted down the Registration of Same-sex Partnerships Bill, which authorities proposed in light of a 2023 top court ruling.

ALT Hong Kong pro-democracy and LGBTQ rights activist Jimmy Sham arrives at the Legislative Council Complex in Hong Kong on September 10, 2025. Hong Kong lawmakers are expected to vote September 10 on whether to grant limited rights to same-sex couples, as fears grow in the LGBTQ community that even this narrow equality bid could be sunk by conservative pro-Beijing voices. A great journalist but also just a really great human. It’s been nearly two decades since I saw him and I feel so sad about this

I can’t recall anything specific, only that my encounters w/ Tom at the Voice were always warm. I’m left with a sense of his empathy. He was always kind to us, a tremendous human. Rare to be able to say that about a celebrated journalist, especially one who’s a NYC legend.

Mandalay residents are searching through collapsed buildings for survivors. Myanmar, already in dire straits after years of civil war, is ill-equipped to cope with this disaster.
In this difficult situation, our Yangon team is doing great work:

In neighboring Thailand, a 30-storey skyscraper collapsed in the quake and rescuers are struggling to pluck out survivors. Many of the construction workers are actually from Myanmar.
