For now, international organizations have largely maintained their output and formal openness to civil society. But those with fewer democratic member states show signs of decline. The full impact of autocratization may still lie ahead, researchers find.

The UN is entering a decisive moment.
Two major questions are now shaping its future: who will become the next Secretary-General, and what will replace the Sustainable Development Goals after 2030?
Both expose the same underlying problem: civil society still has too little influence over decisions that will shape the institution’s response to global crises.
In the race for the next Secretary-General, powerful states continue to dominate the process. Civil society is calling for a feminist woman leader who puts human rights first, yet human rights remain marginal in the debate.
The post-2030 agenda raises a similar concern. The SDGs have fallen short on accountability, civic space and meaningful participation. Their successor must give civil society - particularly Global South and grassroots voices - a stronger role in shaping priorities from the start.
At a time when the UN is struggling to respond to conflict, inequality, climate change and shrinking civic space, stronger civil society participation is not secondary. It is part of what the institution needs to remain relevant and accountable.

The survey:
➡️is anonymous
➡️takes approximately 15–20 minutes
➡️is available in 16 languages, including Arabic, English, French, Portuguese, Spanish and Swahili.
Please consider participating using the link below and sharing it with your network.

The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are badly off track. In a recent article, @democracywb's @AndreasBummel, citing HRF’s recent report, argues that leaving democracy and human rights out of the 2030 Agenda undermined the framework from the start.

The UN Human Rights Council depends on civil society to function, Inés Pousadela & Samuel King of @CIVICUSalliance argue. With structural reform out of reach, states must improve access and protect activists from reprisals.

On October 5, Václav Havel, co-founder of @Forum_2000, would have turned 90. His belief in dialogue, human dignity, democracy, and responsibility remains at the heart of what we do. We honour his legacy by continuing the work he helped begin.

Václav Havel was a hero of mine, and of so many others born behind the Iron Curtain. His humanity and humility were backed by courage and an unerring moral compass.
On the 90th anniversary of his birth, Democracy Without Borders remembers Vaclav Havel, dissident and first president of the Czech Republic. He confronted dictatorship and promoted the vision of a new, democratic United Nations at the UN's Millennium Summit in 2000.

Global governance reforms focus on equality among states. Accountability gets little attention, while civil society participation is under pressure. Researchers warn that reduced participation weakens international institutions.

📅 UPCOMING EVENT | Athens Democracy Forum
What should the new architecture of global democracy support look like?
Traditional funding is shrinking, geopolitical priorities are shifting, and long-standing approaches are being challenged. How can democracy support become more diverse, resilient and locally owned?
On 30 September, International IDEA, the Global Democracy Coalition and Club de Madridwill bring this question to the Athens Democracy Forum.
The panel will feature Dalia Grybauskaitė, former President of Lithuania; Mary Yvonne Ododah of Nuru Trust Network; Pedro Abramovay of Open Society Foundations; Anselmo Lee of the Asia Civil Society Partnership for Sustainable Development; and Barbara Smith of The Carter Center. Annika Silva-Leander of International IDEA will moderate.
Together, they’ll explore how leadership and resources can be more broadly shared, and what roles civil society, governments, philanthropy and international institutions can play.
📅 30 September 2026
🕒 15:10–16:10 Athens time (UTC+3)
📍 Athens Democracy Forum, Athens Conservatoire
We look forward to the conversation in Athens: how do we move beyond defending democracy to rethink the way we support it in the years ahead? We’ll share the key takeaways after the panel.

Amid growing uncertainty about the state of the world, public support for international cooperation remains remarkably resilient.
A new article from our Coalition Partner @democracywb highlights findings from a 34-country survey showing that a majority of people believe countries should work together to address shared global challenges, even when doing so requires compromise. Preventing wars and conflicts emerged as the leading priority for international cooperation, ranking first in most countries surveyed.
The findings offer an encouraging reminder that, despite growing concerns about global developments, people continue to see cooperation, peace, and collective action as essential to tackling the challenges that no country can solve alone.
As conversations around democracy, peace, and global governance continue to evolve, the survey adds to a growing body of evidence that the public still values collaborative approaches to building a more secure and stable future.
