Me with Mohammed Shahabuddin Chuppu who has stepped down today as Bangladesh's 22nd President. I had met Chuppu at his Dhaka office in February 2023, a day after he was declared president elect. Chuppu had spoken to me about the horrific riots of 2001after the Awami League lost power. He had chaired a judicial inquiry commission and spoken to victims of the post-poll violence. "They were mostly Hindus," he had told me.
The going wasn't easy for Chuppu after the Sheikh Hasina government fell on August 2024. And now he has stepped down, two years before his tenure ends. Some reports say this is because of an alleged phone call between him and Hasina when he was in London this year.
For whatever lies ahead, Godspeed Sir.
