Wireless charging is making meaningful progress!
For a fully autonomous vehicle, this is an important step to bring massive scale.
A new Tesla patent application has been published publicly for a wireless vehicle charging system that can detect foreign objects on the charging pad.
The system analyzes changes in the charging pad’s resonant frequencies to detect objects - including metallic items (such as nails) - that could interfere with wireless charging or potentially heat up while charging.
This patent was filed in March 2026.

This is the first thing that actually feels like the car can run an errand with you.
