Let's start by dispensing with the fiction that, historically, women didn't do economic activity. Adults who don't generate revenue have existed, but it was never "women" as a group, and it has never been a large percentage of the population. Husbands and wives always worked, unless they were rich, in which case the husband had a fake job his dad made up for him and the wife wore fancy dresses 24/7 to make sure everyone knew she wasn't useful. "Should women work" is therefore an intra-rich people discussion about whether women whose dad's are billionaires should pretend to be useful in the way the sons of billionaires pretend to be useful. Sorry to both trads and feminists who thought this discourse was about them or that there were choices they could make. Women have always worked, just as men have. In earlier periods of history, all or most work was manual, and since men and women have different equipment, labor was gendered. This was fine, this wasn't the patriarchy, dudes can lift 100 pounds much more easily so we divided the tasks. Today, knowledge work has taken over the economy. There are still physical jobs of course, and we can observe that they're still gendered, but essentially you have no genitals when you're playing with excel. Embodied work is gendered work, abstract work is ungendered work. However, we still have bodies, and we're still conscious of being one gender or another. It's just no longer relevant every minute of every day. It touches the relational elements of work, and it's the dominant fact of romantic relationships, and while those are important, they're out of mind while excel is open. This has a lot of implications in a lot of places, the fact that most people spend hours and hours a day essentially disembodied is a new thing. Some people kinda get stuck in disembodied mode, mentally. This includes being weird with respect to their gender, but there's more.
