Worldwide reports tell that tobacco smoking is less frequent in people hospitalized for Covid-19 than in the respective general population. Why? Here's my weird hypothesis (yes it's weird). @giovannilandoni @FarsalinosK @medicalaxioms @RiccardoPolosa @phil_w888

I have a very good relationship with Giorgia Meloni, and I respect her greatly. I am grateful to the people of Italy and everyone who supports Ukraine. But our gratitude is not just words. We are already sharing our experience. They receive feedback from us on which Italian-made and European-made weapons work and which do not, and what we have improved technologically. We share all of this with Italian manufacturers. We have established joint production facilities in Italy and Ukraine – these are Ukrainian-Italian companies. We have a very good relationship with Leonardo. We are grateful to them. And they receive a lot from us. I am very glad that we support each other in this way and that the Italians’ level of technological expertise is increasing. Italians work at the enterprises and factories opening in Italy. I think this is also very important. It means not only jobs but also assistance for Ukraine and Italy. From an interview with Corriere della Sera. (1/3)

We just published an update on the hypothesis linking the tobacco mosaic virus found in cigarettes to the epidemiology of COVID-19 (still hoping that our hypothesis will make it to the lab bench). frontiersin.org/journals/vir… @phil_w888 – at Carlentini, Sicilia

Still following the field (though with less time to dig into new papers). This is yet another evidence of the "smokers' paradox" or in other words the inconvenient finding that active smoking reduces the COVID attack rate. nature.com/articles/s41598-0… @phil_w888

In AI world, we need to radically change who gets into medical school. All medical info is now readily available, but great clinical judgment is rare & the human touch is almost lost. Being book smart is now much less important than having common sense & being people smart.

Italy's Defense Minister Guido Crosetto: Russia attacked Ukraine, it attacked Crimea, Georgia, if we want to go further back, Afghanistan. So in the Russian mentality, there is the idea of attacking in order to occupy. Most of the Russian budget goes toward investments in weapons or the military. They will reach 1.5 million military personnel. So if the war ended tomorrow, what would Putin do with 1.5 million soldiers? He himself would face internal problems if he stopped the war tomorrow morning. And this gives me the impression, since he continues to accelerate, that he would not want to stop in Ukraine. This is Europe's concern, especially the concern of the Eastern European countries closest to Russia. And that is why, as Europe and NATO, we are preparing - @GuidoCrosetto

"Cannabis doesn't make you violent—despite what recent reports have claimed" I posted about this when the report first came out. Nice to see it being debunked elsewhere. Telegraph claimed cannabis users are “twice as likely to be violent,” based on a King’s College London review of 63 studies (>265,000 people). The review found an association, but the headline overstates it due to confounders, study design, and bias. Confounders (poverty, alcohol, other drugs, upbringing, illegality-related exposure) are poorly controlled; the review favoured less-adjusted analyses. Most studies (46/63) were cross-sectional and showed stronger links (>2× odds); longitudinal studies found only ~17% higher odds. “Twice the odds” ≠ “twice as likely.” Definitions of use and violence were inconsistent, results highly variable, and possible publication bias exists. Evidence certainty was rated “very low” by the study's authors (omitted from the Telegraph report). medicalxpress.com/news/2026-…

2026 is the year of orexin agonists: the ‘GLP1s of the brain’. Takeda’s oveporexton became the first to be FDA-approved this year, for narcolepsy. Orexin agonists could transform sleep medicine just like GLP1s transformed obesity -- and they're already expanding into more indications: sleep disorders beyond narcolepsy, fatigue, depression and even ADHD. You can see that in the pipeline of emerging drugs -- and 8 companies already have clinical-stage orexin agonists.
Every breakthrough in medicine in 2026... so far. 23 newly-approved (entirely novel) drugs, first-in-class cancer drugs, unprecedented efficacy in autoimmunity, bariatric surgery-level weight loss with a drug, and 'GLP1s of the brain'... Read it here: breakingground.substack.com/…

Another angle to this is that dogs effectively stumbled onto what is for them the equivalent of artificial superintelligence 20,000 years ago. The Singularity already happened for dogs. They live in a world they cannot understand, surrounded by miraculous wonders they take entirely for granted, their every need seen to by entities whose thoughts they cannot begin to fathom. The result is that there are about a billion dogs on the planet now. Most of them are pretty happy. Almost none of them need to work. It worked out pretty well for them.

🧵Perché i medici "scappano" dagli ospedali? 1/9 rainews.it/articoli/2026/10/…
